Over polishing nonclearcoated car?

My car isn't clearcoated and a couple of weekends ago, I used the Menzerna polishes with good results. I however, did not get all the imperfections especially on the hood that I would have liked. I've used DACP on a couple customers cars who have had clearcoats and have been in just terrible shape, but never actually on my car. Is it possible to over polish a non clearcoated car and is DACP getting a little too risky?

I assume your talking about your 3 , if so then no DACP is not a bad thing for your car. I learned how to polish on a Black 533i which was a non clear coat. Old BMW's have thick paint so thick that some of the earlier ones had problems with cracking. A solid single stage paint is one of the best to work with in my opinion , there is alot more freedom then with a clear coat. If you really have some problems on the car use a wool bonnet with 3M heavy compound and then work your way up to something like Menzerna Final polish , the paint will have so much depth.

As easy as single stage paints are to work with , you can still do damage so care is still needed. :xyxthumbs

See, I totally agree. I find that working with a single stage paint is so much easier than clearcoated, that I'm glad that I have single stage. My car doesn't have very many problems, but just a couple spots that the intensive didn't clear up.

This raises one question however, what is the huge advantage to clearcoat then? I know it protects better, but what is the other great advantage to clearcoat? I get so many compliments on my paint and people gasp when I tell them it's single stage nonclearcoated, what's so great about clearcoat that it has been deemed necessary to manufacturers?

Greg- I have 2 non-clearcoat cars, an '84 and an '85. I've decided to leave things go rather than continue to polish them out. Yes, I've used methods like the wool/FCRC combo before, but I've also cut through the primer on the '84 using a PC, a MILD polish and a yellow cutting pad. These cars are "keepers" and after 18-19 years, the effects of all that polishing have become significant. I'm trying to keep them as "original paint" as possible from here on out, so I'm living with most of the flaws. Maybe totally different from your situation; just my $0.02. I DO enjoy working single stage paint so much more than clearcoats, just have to know when enough is enough.

Because most people do not take good care of their paint. Look at single stage red cars...oops, I mean single stage pink cars. Clearcoated paint stays looking good longer when not waxed than single stage paints.
