Orbital That Can Do What a Rotary Can

I use this on my Makita 9227 and I can get 95% of all paint defects out with a yellow Lake Country pad and a 1200-1500 grit compound. The thing I love is very little splatter and no swirls. I use this machine at the dealership on almost all cars and the results speak for themselves. I own a pc, Dewalt 443, and Cyclo and this current setup is the best by far. I do sometimes have to use the rotary, but very seldom.

After doing another heavily swirled Audi, I might have to look into a rotary and the dynabrade system. I believe GM uses dynabrades in their Arlington plant.

Scott, I just worked on a new audi today and I am amazed you are able to complete a full swirl removal on them with just a pc. I tried to remove some light water spots etched into the clear on just haf the hood. A yellow cutting pad and optimum hyper compound on my pc was BARELY making a dent in it at all. I too may need a rotary soon.

Every other post seems to be about gawddarn Audi clear and how hard it is! You guys make me feel so stupid for getting one, let alone a black one!

I complete a 90%, not full swirl free finish on Audis with moderate to severe swirling. The black A6 I did today not only had horrible halo swirls but rotary swirls too. Two odd things about that....

1. How can someone add rotary holograms yet not remove any halo swirls?

2. Why do the rotary holograms come out so much more easily than halo swirls?

Hyper and a yellow LC cutting pad was my 2nd step! Clearkote Compound with a burgany Meguiars cutting pad was first. :nervous2:

Audi makes great cars but due to their rock hard paint, I'd never own one-well, maybe a silver S4 but it'd have to be brand new and unmolested by the dealer.

Your setup seems to mimick Festool Rotex 150. In rotex mode, this machine rotates in a rotary fashion and orbits at thesame time. In orbit mode it's by far more powerful than porter cable DA, you can work polishes in with the right pad and achieve results that rival true rotary polisher. Since I use makita about 5% of the time, i might consider dynabrade contraption.

I had a silver A4 for about 4 years and maybe the paint was a little harder to correct, but it didn't swirl very easily either unlike some cars(Hondas come to my mind)

I have a Black A4 UltraSport and have found that it can be a bear to get the marr free, esp if you start out to light in Product/Pad range.

I have a routine now where I can get it done fairly quick by starting off with a medium cut pad/polish first then going to polishing with a light cut combo. I use my Rotary for paint correction and polishing. My PC sits in the bottom shelf of my tool box unless I'm scrubbing carpets.

Audi Factories in Germany (where mostly all if not all of the cars here come from) use Glasurit Paint (mostly likely Waterborne). Shops in the U.S. that do quality work on Audi's will use either that or Spies Hecker (another German Paint) as well.

I don't know what paint Honda uses on thier car's but when I look at other people's cars at work (so I know when they brought/leased it and about how many miles they have on it) they show less chipping and wash swirls.

I'm thinking the Engineers over at Audi Germany have no idea what the roads are like here in the U.S., esp in the winter.

I just professionally re-finished my Sill-Panel Covers (Rockers if you like) using Dupont Paint and Clear Coat. I'll be watching to see if there is any difference in how fast the chipping starts. Hopefully it won't so I can get some PPF on them.

On to the matter at hand though, has ne1 tried one of these thingies yet?

I dunno but it's sounding more and more interesting. I'm going to ask the purchasing manager at work to call our Dynabrade Rep and see what kind of discount our company can get on that thing.

I looked it up on Dynabrade's website and from what I can tell the backing plate is 8". Looking at the Part's layout it seems the included backing plate is removable, but I wonder if you can use your own plate.

Mark Waldron- Thanks for posting that link, very interesting. Might want to get myself one of those...

You guys who are debating the Audi clear- like Mark77 I've come to *like* it. Holds up very well.

Heh heh, they have serious winters over in Germany too ;) It's nice to do the spring cleanup and not have to do any significant marring removal.

MorBid- Are you certain about the Glasurit? I suspect you might have been misinformed; I have it on good authority that they use paint from Spies-Hecker. In fact, the factory reps make a *huge* deal out of refinishing them with a certain S-H paint that'll work when blended into the factory clear. I got a bit of an education into this when I had the A8/S8 repaired; only certain Audi shops are authorized to work on the those and I made sure I was kept in the loop with regard to the official info.

Doesn't Audi's holding company have a significant interest in BASF who OWNS Glasurit? Something else to consider. My dealer uses Glasurit on A4's and TT's, but they use SH on A6's. Don't know of any A/S8's that have come through though, I'll have to ask next time I'm down there.

I talked to David at Optimum and he says the Dynabrades that GM uses are air powered and pretty small, easily held in one hand and he believes they use 4" pads, plus they operate at around 10,000 orbits per second!

Accumulator:

I have to look up where I read it at. I do my own autobody and refinishing work and started (now completed) a project of re-finishing my Sill Panels (or Rockers).

Anyway, I usually use Dupont Chromabase topcoats (base) and Clears but wanted to use paint from the manufactuer that Audi uses. That's when I came across that information.

I have no real way of knowing for sure though, unless I called the Plant in Germany and asked.

Both Spies-Hecker and Glasurit are expensive (I would drop $300.00 on the Clear and additives alone) so I stuck with Dupont.

MorBid & gbackus- Note that my Audi-paint experience/knowledge is limited to A6 4.2s and the A/S8 line, that might explain why I only know about the S-H paint :o Never even occurred to me that they'd use something different on different models and I didn't know about their tie-in with Glasurit either- Learn something new every day!

Heh heh, we're gonna all be pestering our Audi paint guys with "what paint?" questions :D
