Optimum Opti-Glass Clean & Protect Concentrate - Review

For this review, I’m going to share my experience using Optimum Opti-Glass Clean & Protect Concentrate:

From Optimum’s Opti-Glass Clean & Protect Concentrate product page:
Optimum Opti-Glass Clean & Protect Concentrate is a hyper-concentrated glass cleaner that contains a combination of mild cleaners and an advanced polymer that bonds to glass and other silica based surfaces to add water repellency by lowering the surface tension and protect glass by increasing the coefficient of slip. Optimum Opti-Glass Clean & Protect Concentrate can be used as a stand-alone glass sealant or as a booster to Optimum Opti-Glass Coating.

Optimum Opti-Glass Clean & Protect Concentrate Instructions:
1. Dilute Optimum Opti-Glass Clean & Protect with distilled water to make one gallon of ready to use product.
2. Spray liberally on glass surfaces and wipe down with Optimum Glass Towel till glass surface is completely clean.

Ok, 1 fresh gallon of DI water coming right up!

Armed with a fresh spray bottle filled up with Optimum Opti-Glass Clean & Protect and a very dirty rear window from winter driving to clean I set out to see just how good this stuff is.

Following the instructions, I spray half of the rear windshield liberally and wipe down with a clean paper towel:

But much to my annoyance, Opti-Glass Clean & Protect doesn’t wipe clean and remains wet:

In order to get the glass dry I need to use extra paper towels – far more then I should had I used a normal glass cleaner. Enter Stoners Invisible Glass for the remaining dirty side:

To be fair, I also apply a liberal amount of Stoners to the remaining dirty side, use the same amount of fresh paper towels, and easily wipe the surface clean with less effort.

Now both sided of the glass are dry and should be crystal clear but the Opti-Glass Clean & Protect side has hazed over:

Ugh! This is annoying. Since the window is now clear of wintery salt residue I try using a clean dry mf glass towel to remove the haze left behind by Opti-Glass Clean & Protect. But all that seems to do is smear things onto the clean Stoners side. The only way I can remove the hazy left by Opti-Glass Clean & Protect is use Stoners on the entire rear windscreen.

Conclusion

Based on the above, I can’t recommend Opti-Glass Clean & Protect. It’s not an easy product to use or remove. For $49.99 the concentrated version is also painfully expensive. Even in follow-up testing when I only used a waffle weave microfiber glass towel to apply and remove Opti-Glass Clean & Protect a hazy surface was still left behind. As far as the water repellent claims, I can’t say I noticed any improvement in wet conditions after applying Opti-Glass Clean & Protect to my windscreen, side windows, or rear window. I should point out, Stoners also makes a "rain repellent" claim - a claim I have yet to witness, but for $5.99 a bottle who cares? Stoners leaves my glass clean and clear with considerable less effort.

Hope this review was helpful – as always please feel free to ask any questions.

Angus, thanks for the write-up. I purchased this product a few weeks ago. I've used it a couple of times. Seemed like it worked well in terms of cleaning. I also noticed the haze and the only way to remove it was to take a clean MF towel and buff it off.

Overall performance/value: I haven't decided yet

Thanks for the kind words, Tom!

I don't think I'd mind dealing with the haze as much IF the product did what it claimed and acted like a glass sealant. For $49.99, buying an actual glass sealant is a far better value IMHO.

Nice review.

I like the Pinnacle glass cleaner product with water repellant.

I can't believe that little bottle costs 50 bills.

Nice review. Stoners is hard to beat for the price. I have never noticed anything with the rain repellent.

Yup, that little bottle will sent you back 1 whole Ulysses S Grant. Plus unlike Pinnacle's glass cleaner this stuff is for exterior glass only.

Great review

now try pb glass cleaner

Thanks, Ron! Happy to try PB's glass cleaner next. I wonder if @Pockets has any samples laying around?

Thanks, Guz! Stoners is good stuff alright.

I love Pinnacle glass cleaner with rain repel. You would be surprised at how well it works in sheeting the water off. Plus it's so easy to apply. No issues with steaks etc.

My guess is the intention of the glass cleaner is to use it after you've already washed your car (at least that's how I clean windows), the protection/water beading attributes are the main feature rather than deep cleaning and it is meant to be used in conjunction with Optimum Glass Coating. That being said, my go to glass cleaner is ONR @ 64:1 dilution since it cleans well and makes the glass water repellent. And it costs pennies to make.

I agree, and would add if this is the case Optimum needs to revise their labeling to clarify how Opti-Glass Clean & Protect should be used. This time of year I'm constantly cleaning my windows between maintenance washes and having to spend extra time buffing off a product that is supposed to "clean and protect" any glass surface (regardless of preexisting coating or not) is a deal breaker for me.

good review angus. I thought it was just me, but I had the same results when I tired it. I still try using the rest of my gallon mix and have big problems with streaking and haziness. definitely easier for me to use stoners or megs and follow up with a quick glass sealant.

Opti Glass C&P is a great product and works very well with no hazing if you use it sparingly and forget about the microfiber towel.
I have found to get flawless results with C&P a terry cloth towel is the only way to go.
On just washed glass spray glass sparingly with C&P and then wipe with a terry towel and polish the the glass until dry.
On dirty glass spray sparingly. wipe then turn the towel and polish until dry.
Using the product sparingly wiping and polishing dry takes only about 5 seconds longer than any other glass cleaner.
This is the only place I recommend using terry towels, but for this they do yield the best results.

From the OP's pictures he may have used much product. A light mist is all that is needed.

Paper towels are useless for glass cleaning on any type IMHO. All they do is smear dirt around on the glass.

Stoners Invisible Glass (without rain protect) is also one of the best glass cleaners on interior and exterior glass and I still use it on interior glass.

Thanks for the suggestion. While I can believe your right about using a light mist and a cotton terry cloth towel, your comments highlight the need for Optimum to either revise their directions or re-brand Opti Glass C&P as a Optimum Opti-Glass Coating booster only. From the follow-up comments I received above and over on AGO, other Opti Glass C&P user get far better results when boosting glass surfaces with an existing application of Optimum Opti-Glass Coating.

fwiw..I'm on my 2nd bottle of Optiglass Clean and Protect (the RTU) and I have had slight issues with drying it, but I solely use the rupes mf towels provided in the duetto kit I ordered over a year ago- a second dry towel and im good

on my challenger's front windshield I have only used the Optiglass and it behaves like a treated windshield for sure, this stuff definitely works, I can attest to that.

I spray the windows and let it sit for about a minute then remove. fortunately for me I have had no issues with this product and I plan on buying more, but don't see myself splurging for the $50 concentrate any time soon. takes me several months to use one bottle

Good to know. If you lived closer I'd gladly give you what I have left!

I appreciate the offer. I am pleased with it but I only use it in the garage and on my personal car. I've been using it since it came out and I'm only on the end of my 2nd bottle.
It definitely does not wipe up as easily as my go to Poorboys but I honestly was quite inpressed with the water behavior of my windshield the two rare times I was actually driving my SRT and it rained. I don't know how much you'd have to use to get good results but I'd say my windshield is at that point.

I'm considering polishing the glass and starting over. It needs a good polishing anyways. Might be a good chance to test some spray on glass protectors.
