Opti-coat for the first time user?

Hey guys - have a friend who is considering Opti-coat on a brand new vehicle, and I was wondering about the degree of difficulty involved in using the product. Obviously as it is "permanent" (a clear selling feature) there isn't room for error in application. Are there specific tips and tricks involved to get a good finish? Would you foks recommend it for someone who has some experience with detailing but is certainly not a professional?



Any info much appreciated.

I wouldn't recommend it to anyone that isn't well versed in detailing. Check out all the threads where people have over applied KSG or #16 or FK1000P. People just want to put on WAY too much product and the results with OptiCoat are much worse. If he's used one of the above or Optiseal/UPGP/ZCS then maybe. I know I've done plenty with finicky products and still was very apprehensive about using it.



Personally, I wouldn't mind doing the OptiCoat for any friend, doing a whole car takes 20-30 minutes. The prep work is the killer.

6-7 years ago I asked a local and highly experienced detailer how he gets his 993, 996, 997 and soon to be 991 Porsches to just exude this fantastic glow on the paint. He told me to buy a machine, some pads and get the right polishes. He also told me that "the shine is in the polish" or like Dan says "its in the prep work".



I asked if he ever used Zaino polishes. Oh yeah he said. Prep, prep and more prep. From that time on I now do a minimum 2-step polish and only then do I apply my Zurtle Wax, my Zymol Royale or my Zaino Z-2. Next year I will try Opti-Coat. Hopefully I will be prepared.
 
Yup, all about the prep for a good finish. Regarding the OP's question, I'd say with enough research/reading on here, he should be fine. I wouldn't jump into it though, make sure he researches well.
 
Jeff, I'm reading this as your doing the work for a friend. I'm a novice that has lurked here for a few years and got lots of great tips. This summer I have applied Opti-Coat 2 to 4 vehicles for family and myself. 3 of which were new (and white which makes it more difficult). All required minor correction thanks to dealers. The key is having good light and not over applying. I just followed the directions and tried not to rush it. If your confident in yourself doing the prep work I think you could do ok with the Opti. good luck
 
I have been really wanting to use Opti Coat for a long time, but I know it's probably best that I don't. I'm not new to polishing or detailing, I am confident in my skills there. Its just have a tendency to over apply products when I apply them by hand. Maybe I'll try it on a section one day and seem how thing go. Is there an Applying Opti Coat for Dummies thread on here?:)

Using the CQuartz micro suede applicators with their foam block really works well with Opti-Coat and it seems to lessen the chance for applying the product too heavy. It goes on much more uniform too IMO.



I know you can order the micro suede's on AG, but not sure they sell the foam block.
