Oprah Winfrey is welcome at Detail City anytime she wants to stop by!

My neighbor who usedta drive a 89 Honda Civic Hatchback got a G6 off Oprah, she said she almost sh*t herself when Oprah started givin out keys. I told her if she ever got tired of the car to give it to me and I'd take care of it.

speaking of oprah........

last week friday i was flipping through the channels and then i saw the singer usher on TV singing and dancing. then i realzied that the show was oprah. i couldn't believe that she got usher on her show. it was pretty cool, because there was this oprah fan that wrote to oprah, saying that her best friend is in love with usher, and that she would die to meet him. so anyways, they set it up, and while the friend was bowling, usher came up behind her. after she threw the ball, she turned around and alomst fainted. it was really intersting. usher seemed to be a pretty cool guy.

what was funny was, when usher was singing in oprah's studio, all of her fans were trying to clap the "cool" way like usher. it was sorta stupid, these midddle age white women that have no rythym trying to clap like usher. anyways it was funny. maybe one day dwayne will decide to give out the some UPP to everyone on the forums :)

Taxed

The recipients will have to pay taxes on the cars now. Originally I did not think they would have to do so. Now I read that they will. On a side note, two of the recipients (married couple I think) live about five miles away from me. They had a write up in the paper about them.

Yes, I heard this morning that some of the people are quite upset about it. But even if they were in the highest tax bracket (which I really doubt!!), the income tax would be about $7K. Where else can you get a $28K car for only $7K.

If they cannot afford the taxes, they are free to sell the car, and purchase something for less money, thereby giving them the funds necessary to pay the tax man.

It certainly doesn't seem right to be blaming Oprah for the government's rules on taxing income!!

Just my $.02!

Yeah, I thought it was cool until I saw the report on CNN.com. I think Oprahs heart was in the right place, but her production company spokesperson was pretty cold when she said they had the choice of paying the tax outright, selling the car to pay the tax (hmm, taxed and still no ride), or forfieting the car (and still no ride!).

They get coming and going! :ticked

Unfortunately, that's the way the government works. You must pay taxes on ALL income. If Oprah had paid the tax for the "winners", that would have been considered "income" also, and so they would have been taxed on that. It's a catch 22!

If they sold the car to pay the taxes, even at the highest tax rate, they would still have $20K left to buy another car. It's still a pretty good deal, if you ask me!!

The people are given a new car and others have to trash the act because of taxes? I guess no good deed goes unpunished.

I was not trashing the act. If you read my post you will see that I said I felt Oprah's heart was in the right place. What I was saying was that her production company spokesperson lacked tact in her response to the situation.

DH... My post wasn't directed at you. THere seems to be a lot of talk in general that these people getting the cars are screwed because of the taxes. I just hate to see comments like that over such a great act.
