Operation Car Spa II, Product testing on Blue Mazda Protege Collinite 476s and M205

Ok, so today I decided to refine some techniques, but also test out some products. So here we go.

I decided to see if Collinite 476s will bead after dealing with DD conditions. My brother drives his car around brooklyn and flushing (so consider it urban city/highway beatdown?)

Washes I'll be doing more or less when he comes home with ONR maybe once a week for as long as the weather is decent (figure most average joes wont bother once it gets cold.)

At First Glance

Everyone meet car: I usually did a wash/clay NXT double coat (paste and liquid) treatment--but since I got the Flex, I figured "why not" I haven't touched this car in ummm..2 months?

I've tried claying this and also tested to see if NXT could cover some of this...to no avail...

WHAT I DID

ONR WASH

CLAYBAR WITH FRESH ONR/WATER SOLUTION

Dab Dry.

Started to rain (great huh?) so had to pull it into my really dimlit gargage ( I do hope to invest in working lights--I hear some are unhealthy for you?) it really made my job difficult to say the least...

And w.e. you call this piece..rear quarter panel by wheel well?

WHAT I DID

Flex 3401 speed 4-5 with Black LC CCS pad with M205

My reason was this--Mazda seemed to have really soft Clear and the swirls didn't seem too bad...

For those deeper scratches I used Orange LC CCS pads with M105, then IPA before hitting it with M205

So I THOUGHT I got it out but again--terrible lighting in my garage so...first pass

When I was done it got like this:

WHAT I DID

IPA Wipedown

Weather subsided so pulled car out again

44509_565610690168_68701646_32416397_6000376_n.jpg

Once I did a quick once around, I used Microfiber Pads to apply the product--pretty much as long as i saw a think streak of product--I just kept spreading it--when after a few wipes, i didn't see the streaking, I put more product on pad..usually just a few light rubs into the tin (I'm thinking maybe I should get like a small putty knife or something...) once I got it all on..I started from where I started and buffed off in same order..

Thunder started rumbling again so I pulled her into the garage to cure--tomorrow I was going to put a NXT coat on top--but thinking about maybe for the sake of this experiment putting on another layer of 476s only because I had to rush the application because of the weather and I had to run into the house because of some personal family stuff but didn't want to leave the car unfinished

NOW, my thoughts.

PRODUCT REVIEW

ONR: I really like the smell of it-- and when I put it in the water, I didn't really get the hooplah (the first night I used it I was so tired that I didn't give it much thought) but it all made sense when I used it as clay lube....I'll leave it at that. I DID notice however that if i let it dry, it left water spots which weren't a big deal because I just did a quick wipe with ONR again and dried--but I thought this wasn't supposed to leave any?

BLACK LC CCS: I'm not quite sure that this was the right pad choice--but there were some RIDS left over but being forced to contort to fit in the garage and bad lighting didn't help either. Also time constraints--but I was able to get most of the stuff out. I put down I'd say 10lbs of pressure while I worked and before I wiped I did a section pass or two with minimal pressure. It was interesting that the 205 seemed to react differently when I used the different pad...

Collinite 476 Application AFAICT, was a singe--but some did mention that it hazed the next day--being that I rushed the application, I'l inspect it in the morning. It kind of smells like...gas or turpentine or something...but I mean...I'll see how it goes... btw I also put it on the front windshield and the passenger side windows i think just to see if there's a huge difference.. more on that tomorrow.

Any thoughts, Tips, Pointers ETC would be much appreciated (please keep in constructive)

Any questions I'll be happy to answer--though if you want expertise advise--I'd prolly ask one of the sages

Special Thanks to Accumulator--as always sir, you took the time to help out a complete noob.

I've found that if you use a damp applicator for the 476s, it'll help to spread it.

I personally give it about 15min. to a 1/2 hour to set up. (NEVER in direct sunlight, though).

I apply it then move on to dress the tires and seal the wheels,

maybe treat the windows, etc., then buff off. Never had problems with removal.

Any way you choose to do it, I think as long as you keep the application thin, you'll be OK.

yea i think that's what I'm ganna do tomorrow...had to pull it out of the garage so figure tomorrow I'll give it a quick onr wash and then put on another 476 coat so it can really get in there--and in the mean time i'm ganna get the wheels/tires done....sigh I jus realized that i forgot the wheel wells too.......darnit.....

ATM all i have are the orange red and black pads--I'll order some whites and see where it takes me :)

as for cure time--I thought it was 8 hours to cure?

Sorry, didn't mean to imply that it would actually take 2 weeks to cure....just emphasizing that you might want to give it

plenty of time before you layer it.

Cure time varies per product: some 6 hrs. or less, others 12-24 or more.

IME, 476 needs some time.........in fact, I don't even try to layer it any more. One coat, that's it.

I'll boost with quick wax (OCW or Aquawax) every so often.

I'll apply a fresh coat during winter prep after I strip the paint and have a clean surface.

well i normally wou;dn't layer either but i'm concerned that I didn't get it enough setup time when I first applied it so....

oh on a side note I'm sure you guys would understand me cause my girl thinks i'm crazy...ever look at a car and think to yourself.."i wouldn't mind detailing that car..."

Kept looking over at these while I was working on my brtohers

I understand about your concern with another coat. Hell, do it. You never know, you might stumble across a technique to make it easier. Let us know how it goes.

And, yes, I've also had the compulsive urge to detail random cars! LOL!

I figure it's had over 8 hours to cure--so onr and maybe some QD should do the trick to take off any excess left on (btw any recommendations for which QD i should use? I feel like the ones I have which are otc from like claybar kits have cleaners--and I don't want to take off the wax I just put on)

EDIT

Sigh...the city FINALLY decides to cut down the trees on my property (the bigger sections of the trees have been breaking off on their own and poses a huge potential danger) so with all the sawdust and pollen and all that flying about---i guess i WILL have to wait....

I like the Mother's Showtime.....not sure about cleaners; even if it does, I doubt it would

be enough to strip wax. I like that it doesn't contain any wax that would interfere with bonding.

If you're washing the car anyway, you could probably skip the QD and just go straight to the 476.

Alexshimshimhae- Glad it turned out so nice!

I wouldn't worry about any work lighting being unhealthy.

I would *NOT* try doing that second coat of 476S. IF it turns out OK, then swell, and yeah, it'll wear like iron. BUT...if it causes pseudo-holograms you're gonna have a *BIG* problem on your hands. IF you really want to do it, wait until after the next wash.

FWIW, I do my Collinite layering with 845, and if you try layering the 476S and *do* get problems, the quickest/easiest way to fix it is to do a coat of 845 over top. I don't know if it *solves* the problem via solvent-action or just appears to solve it via filling, but it always works for me and no, the pseudo-holograms have never come back (but then I redo the 845 too, so who knows what's going on).

Oh, and don't put NXT over top of the Collinite...all sorts of wrong there.

I was thinking about layering the 845 say next week and then topping it maybe an hour later with 476--but I'm not sure how I want to go about this experiment... I'm just worried that I didn't give enough time for the 476 to properly bond when i put it on yesterday because i pretty much speed applied it and then wiped it down as soon as i applied it to the whole car.... so figure it had MAYBE 5 minutes to set.

I'm actually tempted to spray down my car now just to see it bead...

2 Days in I figured I should test the beading so I know what to compare it to..

The slight angle of the hood was giving me a hard time keeping water on lol but the roof was level so...

I'd just do the 845 and not risk complications by doing more 476S.

Noting that you really oughta wait until wax will pass the "finger-swipe" test, I'm pretty confident that the 476S turned out just fine. Even if you merely W-O-W-O it still works out pretty well.

Did you rewash/etc. and all that?

not sure what the finger-swype test is =[ but i think some of the wax was still damp when i wiped off.

no i didn't wash--i just hosed down today...thinking about a quick onr though...but my brother's gotta head out so... =[

Finger-swipe test = does the wax wipe off clean and dry when you rub it gently with your finger.

Yikes, no water spots, or marring if you dried it? :soscared:

well I did a quick hose down partially because I noticed that pollen (where the hell did htey come from?!) was coming down so did a quick rinse--brother decided to drive off so i noticed all the water wisked off before he even got halfway down the block :)
