Oops....Wheel Problem - Chalk/haze look

A neighbor and I detailed his fathers 93 Chevy Blazer over the weekend. It's been a solid 5 years since ANYTHING has been touched inside or out. I digress....

Back on topic: (I hate to air mistakes!!!!)

The wheels/tires were so gunked up with brake dust and baked on road goo, that we decided to use a 50/50 solution of simple green & water. This cleaned the tires/rims (3 passes), but produced a milky white haze on the rims. Almost looked like patches of the clear on the wheels were starting to go bad. I suspect part of this was caused by letting the simple green soak on the rims for 3-4 minutes because the hazing showed up a lot more in spots where the simple green started to dry. Is there anything that I can try to correct or improve this?

Odds are the marks were already there, you just couldn't see them. Try using a paint cleaner/polish on the wheels. It may not bring them totally back, but it should at least make it look better

mgm2003, I would also suggest to try some polish or cleaner (perhaps some chemical type - like AIO). I can't tell if Simple green caused these "failures" or they were, like Don said, already there. Five years of total neglect is a way too much.

P.S. Can you attach some of the pictures. Maybe you could get better advice on what to do.

93 Blazer? The clear on the wheels are bad. I had a 94 Sonoma and the clear was shot on them as well. They were all hazy looking. I would wet sand and polish them back and it would not take long for them to get bad again. I sold them to my neighbor who wanted them and bought some polished wheels instead. LOL

I did a jeep that had clear coated rims and I used 409 and had the same thing happen. I polished them out and that took care of it. What happened is the clear was hazed by the 409 like oxadadtion for lack of better trems
