Best approach IMO:
-determine whether what you're currently doing needs any changes, don't fix what's not broken
-be discerning about whose advice/opinions/experiences you consider
-try to be systematic about trying stuff so you have a better idea what really does/doesn't do what
-go by your first-hand experiences regardless of what others say
When it comes to protection, I never expected any of my LSPs to stand up to nasty contamination; I only stumbled across what works well for me by accident; during long roadtrips when I didn't clean off bugs/bird bombs/etc. I noticed that some LSPs did/didn't seem to protect my paint against etching. When products did seem to offer protection, I gambled and let such stuff stay on there for a while while I anxiously observed, and !lucky me! the products did consistently protect the paint. Well, at least so far! We'll see if I've jinxed myself by posting all this...
