UPDATE LOOK TO BOTTOM OF PAGE

Well folks, until now I have kept this a big secret. I am ashamed to say that, yes this is my engine bay. I bought this car used with 190 000ish KM (I am Canadian) and this is what the previous owner had done to protect the engine bay from rust. Some southerners may never have seen this but up here where we use salt on the roads in the winter we need protection against the evil salt. This coating will prevent rust, now that I don't drive this in the winter I feel comfortable removing this "protectant". I will start you off with a couple good pics of my ride then bring on the bad.

Now for the engine bay, these are initial pics. I will update as I make progress, please offer any suggestions to help me along the way! I will need all the help I can get.

I hope to update soon on the beginning of this journey.

A very nice looking Integra you have, what are you using on it? I've seen quite a few engine bays like that around here. Use some diluted APC on the plastics and other areas where the undercoating isn't present and agitate with brushes. Use the wheel cleaner as suggested and that should do it for the coating. Hope you get to it soon so we can see the results. :)

I've been happy with undiluted Simple Green, Automotive formula for tough grime/messes like that.

Looks like you've got a lot of scrubbing to do.

Good luck.

Yeah, this could get messy! The undercoat is dry on my paint. It is not just some oil that degreaser will take off, I am affraid I will have to scrub for hours.

So today I got down to business. I ended up scrubbing a small area with meguire's paint cleaner for about an hour and a half. I realized there might be a better way and used some Varsol degreaser along with some APC. I let that solution sit on the gunk for about 5-10min while scrubbing select areas (valve cover, some hoses, whatever could be effectivly scrubbed with the brush). I then proceeded to use a power washer on the rest of it. I was surprised that it took off the gunk fairly easily while leaving some behind. I have to admit it is livable now but I still would like to paint and clean further some areas. I will post pics as soon as I can get some good ones.

Here are the pics, I am going to group similar before and after shots. This is only stage 1 as I plan to eliminate as much of the rust as I possibly can.

So now to tackle that pesky rust.

Wow great after shots. Where did you get the degreaser and the APC? And what did you use on the hood? I need to clean up mine bad.

Very nice.

I have some Cosmoline (I think that is what is in your compartment) on my engine and have been trying to figure out how to get it off. Your suggestion of using Varsol degreaser and APC seems to be the key.
