One step paint sealants

For those more experienced than I, what are your opinions of the one step sealants such as Opti-seal, Ultima Paint Guard Plus (UPGP), and Zaino z-cs?

Have read some raving reviews of both Opti-Seal and UPGP.

For those that have used these and sealants that require buffing is there any drawbacks from one style or the other?

The reason for my inquiry is to find a quality sealant that will last through the winter till spring and still be protecting when it comes time to detail later in the spring. I live in Minnesota so the wash and wax season for those of us without heated garages is relatively short.

Thanks in advance.

FWIW...I was considering the same thing (and some of the products you listed) a few weeks ago when I needed to prepare a new car for a Pittsburgh winter that will not get waxed again until April. The idea of a one step sealant was very appealing to me and I almost went that route.

However, after a lot of reviewing, it appeared to me that Collinite 476S or Finish Kare 1000P would offer more durability and protection from the elements than the one-step sealants. That said, I did speak with Dr. G of Optimum Paint Products and he said that one coat of Opti-Seal would make it through the winter.

Also, you may want to pick up some ONR so that you can wash weather permitting.

The only sealants that I have are DG105, DG501, FK215, 1000p(not a traditional sealant) and UPGP. For me I find myself reaching for UPGP most of the time because of its ease of use. It is such a breeze and requires only a few minutes. I personally dont find any drawbacks between WOWO and WOWA sealants. Its mostly user preference. I can tell you that the sealants I use above are extremely easy to apply and even easier to remove. They will all easily last threw winter and into spring. 1000P is a bit harder to use than the rest but once you get the technique down its easy.

Sealants that I've been wanting to try are 4* UPP and Blackfire's Wet diamond. I hear they are extremely easy to use and look great.

If you want fast and easy, Ultima is a star (I should know!).

The idea behind these products is fantastic. The mass market isn't ready for them.

Nothing beats the Ultima Tire & Trim Guard for durability... NOTHING. I'm shocked no one else has come out with a competing product.

Couldn't agree more. Both are go to products for me.

I first tried UPGP two years ago think a WOWA could not do that great of a job, but the stuff is amazing.

UTTGP is great on trim and literally lasts months with no streaking after rain.

The main difference is ease of use. I have OS, UPGP, and I haven't tried ZCS but I love the other two. I use them a ton. I can wax a car in 5 min, and they last. UPGP will give you more of an optically clear look than OS but they're fantastic products.

I also need to get ready for winter, or what could more appropriately be called the wet season here in the pacific north west.

It is my understanding that a sealant would go on after all the polishing is complete, and then you apply wax or LSP if you wish on top of the sealant?

I don't have snow and salt to deal with, just endless, ENDLESS rain.

Apply the sealant first, then if you want to wax as well you can. If its warm enough, you can always add another layer of sealant.

I was a little leary when UPGP came out but trust us on this 3 coats and it will last well past any winter i think you will encounter. This stuff is really the bomb when it comes to sealents and how easy it is to apply.

I am going to put on some DWG tomorrow and top it with the first coat and then go for the next 2 coats and just like last year it will still protect.

WOW !! Thanks for all the replies fellas.

Sounds like UPGP is the real deal.

Now my next question on these one steps (UPGP in particular). How tricky is it to get just the right amount on to prevent any streaking etc.? And is multiple coats better or not needed?

I have used Megs #21 2.0 in the past and have learned that it is best applied with a very thin coat, almost as if your hardly spreading any on at all. #21 goes on easy and is easy to buff out, but not sure it would last more than a few months and I need something to go at least 5 or 6 months. Winters up here mean a ton of road salt, so weekly washing at the local tunnel wash is a fact of life.

Its not that tricky to apply UPGP, once you have a panel or two you should get the hang of it. Just spray the app twice at first and then once for every panel. The multiple coats helps with protection, and also with clarity in the paint. Its hard to believe but it really does make a drastic change in the appearance. I have a client(also an autopian) with a black Focus and after a few visits, each time applying UPGP, I noticed the reflections in the paint were very crisp.

I've been using Collinite 476 on my cars for a few years now and I love those beads (of water). The problem is that now I have a courier route where I'm running 600 miles a day. Before a couple of layers of 476 would easily last about 7 months. Now, if I can get a month and a half out of 476 on my courier vehicle I count myself lucky. Would 2 or more layers of Opti-seal or UPGP last more than a few months or the 600 miles a day on my vehicle wear out any and all LSP's.

No, not with my experience.

A fantastic unbelieveable product without a doubt, far too easy and simple for detailers probably :D quick, easy and durable, you would think they would be ideal for the masses but maybe not quite hitting the right marketing outlets ?
