Can anyone recommend a good paintless dent repair person in the SF Bay Area? Preferrably one that won't rip me off..?

I can't vouch for their SF location. but last week I had a couple of small dents removed at Dent Wizard in Atlanta. They have a SF store:

SP SAN FRANCISCO DENT WIZARD RETAIL STORE 800-336-8626 SP 301 11TH ST., #2A

They did a very good job.

Posted to the e36m3 list. I haven't used 'em, but someone on the list did and was very satisfied.

I can highly recommend Brad Treece at DentPro from San Jose. Call DentPro

of San Jose at 408-370-9500 and ask to schedule an appointment at your

location for your BMW with him. You want Brad, because he is the man when it comes to getting dings out of

BMW's. He has taken several dings out of our M3s over the last five

years. His most recent trip out was to remove a crease that a 4WD Suburban

(even though I was parked in the middle of nowhere, he had to park next to

me) put in the passenger door that went from almost the window, to down

past the body style line. Simply amazing!!! You can't even tell it was

ever molested.

I went to a Dent Magic here in Houston and told the owner I was quite unsure about this and could he show me some of his work. He showed me several cars and although I didn't say this to him, I didn't believe there had been dents where he showed me. Well, he took four dings out of one of my doors on the M3, and you can't tell where they were. It is fantastic how good he did. He just kept working the dents until they were gone! A terrific process.

A friend of mine recently asked if I could detail his dad's car as a birthday present so we set a date and he had me coordinate with his mom regarding the details. Unfortunately, I only had the car for less than a day and while he's more interested in paint correction, it was obvious Mom wanted more attention paid to the interior. So I had about 8 hours into this car, and would have really liked more time but it wasn't meant to be. As such, it's not my best work but they seemed pleased with it nonetheless. I just hate that feeling of knowing how and where I could improve it given the chance, but not having that opportunity. Stupid OCD kills me sometimes.

Anyway, his Dad has close to 90k miles on this 2006 VW Jetta. Not sure what they call this paint but it's essentially flat black, and was fairly swirled up, dull and water-spotted all over. I didn't bother with any 50/50s or closeups because it wasn't a correction and my POS camera can't handle it anyway. Trust me when I say that correction was in the < 50% range, so I'm not bragging by any means. The paint was pretty hard, at least from my limited experience.

The interior was fairly rough too. He lives in this car and it showed. I remember weekendwarrior telling me once that VW carpet is like velcro. Well, he wasn't kidding. Brush, vac, brush, vac, lint roller, vac. Repeat. I even tried pulling some of the bigger bits of debris out by hand without much luck. :banghead: Enough talk, here's some pics.

Early morning, sun isn't out yet. Not a great before pic, but the only one that came out at all. Man, I hate my camera.

Grubby wheels, probably never been cleaned. And yet still has less brake dust than my BMW wheels do after only a week.

Process

Wash
Foamed with CG CWG, then ONR wash
Wheels and tires cleaned with Brown Royal wheel cleaner
Clayed with Griots clay, Megs Last Touch 1:1 as lube
Megs APC+ 4:1 on front wells, brush and heavy spray on carpeted rear wells

Polished with M205/LC orange pads on Flex 3401 and G110v2, 6.5" and 4" respectively. Tried D151 and it kept gumming up immediately. Tried M105 and it left considerable haze. Went with 205, left a good finish but didn't correct much on this paint.

LSP was DG105

Interior vinyl and leather seats wiped down with Opt Protectant Plus. Interior glass got Surf City Garage Clearly Better. Pedals cleaned with APC+ 10:1, and yes I missed a couple of spots.

Exhaust
I tried cleaning with 0000 steel wool and NXT Metal Polish, M105 and DG501. No matter what I used, it didn't get any better than this. Very disappointed here. Would love any suggestions.

Tires were dressed with Stoners MSLT tire spray, front wheel wells with CG Bare Bones.

In the end, I ended up with a clean, shiny, swirly Jetta. Lesson here I guess would be that you can't expect to one-step a black VW. Oh well, gotta learn some how. Thanks for looking.

Looks pretty darn good considering the time restraint you had. You mentioned that they were happy with the results, so in the end, I guess that's what matters most. Like you, I easily get wrapped up in "perfection mode" though, and it can definitely be frustrating. Nice job though.

Even though you were not 100% happy with the results, the customer was. In the end that is all that matters. The car looks 100% better then it did before. You might want to point out to the customer the swirls that remain and explain to them that given enough time, you can remove them and give them a near perfect finish. Maybe you can get them as a repeat customer and then really work some magic for them.

Great job!

Thanks for the kind words fellas. I'm really having a hard time getting my head around doing the work for other people's expectations instead of my own. I hated to see it leave my hands still swirled up, but given their reaction when they saw it, I could see they were happy with it. That might not be enough for my ego, but it'll have to do, right?
