One of the BEST writeups EVER!

Damn!!! Now that was a detail in the true sense of the word - I mean the guy cleaned the spare tire and dressed it? Then as if that wasnt' enough he gives the car jack a once over!

I like his pic composition - lesson to be learned we don't need those 6" shots of the paint to see swirls......back it up guys

Holy crap!, that's quite a bit of write-up while detailing!:wow:

OK, so now I don't feel so bad when I do a full concours detail. Pretty much what you have to do, take it all down, clean it, treat it and when you think you're done, you're not.

Getting the whole underside done can be a long and tough effort, but when cars are shown with mirrors on the floor to show-off the suspension etc, you HAVE to be really anal on the clean and dress department. This take a long time if the car was driven. Show only cars? Not long at all, but you'd be amazed how much dust finds its way into areas or worse, moisture rusting/discoloring metal/chrome parts. Those take removing and polished on a bench wheel which is no fun and very messy.

He used a well assortment of chemicals and polishes, and as you can tell, knows how each work and make them all work to his advantage. Very well thought out planning. He thought this out well in advance, had the equipment and skill to do a full tear-down.

As for removing emblems, I use dental floss (since moving to Montana to raise my lonely dental floss..) sorry couldn't help the Frank Zappa insert... anyway, the putty knife was a bit scary. Dental floss works well for emblem removal. Or fishing line as well...

I'd say... Hey Dave B! Can you match that effort and put that on a DVD? Maybe with the Ultima line? Also only using the UDM? :grinno:

Anyway, one hell of a detail and write-up!!:2thumbs:

Deanski

Boras come with Dunlop Sport A2s?

Fancy that. I think Jettas come with some horrendous touring tire.

With 90k on the clock I doubt they are original.

My Wife's Jetta came with horrible Goodyears, and my Mom's with Michelin Energy's, my Rabbit with Continental Contitourings. It's pretty much the cheapest bid they get for tires mnf'd within their specs...

I only saw a name on the spare.

That is one of the most complete details and write ups I have ever seen on here. You even cleaned the jack! Nothing short of amazing. I can't believe the amount of attention you put into it. Mapping out the car with the paint thickness gauge and sectioning off the hood or bonnet as you call it in UK. Even the Queen Mother would be proud.

Good detail, better writeup. I have to give him props, he probably spent as much time on photos as the detail.

My sentiments exactly. To me the "huge project" was the documentation! And I don't mean that as being *in any way* a knock on the great detail.

I'll risk being flame-bait and say that I'm a *little* surprised that so many Autopians think that it was such an over-the-top job...it struck me as the sort of reconditioning one simply *does* when bringing a previously-neglected vehicle into the stable. You know, one big clean-up like that and then you just maintain it.
