oil filters

Generally cost is so much higher on a Manufacture Branded filter.

I have yet to find OEM filter that is more expensive than Mobil1.:nixweiss

BMW drop in filter because of its nature is hard to find in other places than dealership and it's still around $8.

Original japanese DENSO filter (great one!) is ~ $7 from Lexus dealer and probably cheaper from Toyota if you can find one.

The story is similar for other import cars.

True,

I was thinking of your run of the mill Wal-mart fram's etc.

Good point though. Some definately cost more, but I you may get more too.;)

Honestly, I still have to find better canister type filter than japanese DENSO, quality of filtering media and design of bypass valve are top notch. Click here for interesting comparo.

Notice were the filters were made:D and be sure to take a look at Mobil1 filter study.

You are all talking about oil filters that cost $8 to $10. The repair shop I went to charged me $58.30 for the filter. I guess I got ripped off. On the bill it is listed as a 8U (or V) 454L purolater (I saw the box) $58.30.

I don't feel good about this. I paid by credit card. Is there anything I can do about this apparent overcharge?

Thanks to all you guys for your help. Balgear:mad:

Could this $58.30 be the charge for the entire oil change service? That would be a little closer to being reasonable. Places around here charge around $50 for a synthetic oil change.

If that price is for a synthetic oil change then I would consider that reasonable. Most places charge about that with taxes around here.

To; 03 Indigo Blue VW,

Thanks for your feedback. Just to explain in a little more detail the job is priced as follows;

I provided 2 gallons of my own Amsoil.

Charged 58.30 for oil filter, 44.29 for an air filter,

Labor was 13.48 for oil change, new filters, check fluids and air pressure.

Clear computer codes 45.00

Shop supplies 7.25

Tax 6.67

Grand total; $174.99 (using my own oil)

This must be the most expensive oil change I've ever heard of. There must be a mistake, go back and confront the manager. $44.29 will probably get you K&N air filter...

Hi,

Myles, I guess it depends on what manufacturer.

I am one of those obsessives who cuts oil filters open (I have to keep this from my family). As I use MG Rover cars, those are the filters I cut open. From what I can see (I am not a laboratory) the MGR oem filters are very well made, strong and well-detailed. I would have no worry about using these, as indeed I do.

By the way, the insides of the MGR standard filter and their 'Premium' filter are apparently identical. A pity the price isn't.

Other recommended filters, Mann, Bosch, Mobil, etc. are virtually unobtainable in the UK.

Regards, Kes.

The problem with Pure One filters is they are so tightly packed then can actually restrict oil flow higher in the power band.

If you want the cream of the crop get the Mobil 1 filters. They are a total synthetic media. Be prepared to pay though, they are around $13/each.

I use Mahle (German) oil filter. It doesn't seem to restrict

the oil flow. The car has some track time.

If the oil flow was restricted I would hear about it from

my engine on the track.

Mahle is what BMW uses when they change your oil.

Good luck,

Hi,

I used to look down on Fram filters, after reading these oil filter studies (which now must be getting a little long in the tooth). So when I had my daily-use Rover serviced last year (yes, I'm a 12,000-mile oil changer) I was a little miffed to find a Fram filter had been used.

Last week I swapped the filter for a Rover oem, and cut open the Fram filter, a messy and sometimes bloody job. From my previous comments I believe that the Rover filter is a well-made, strong, high-quality product that I'm happy to use.

The Fram filter is in all respects except one identical to the Rover filter, and indeed looks to be the same product. The only internal components having part numbers (the anti-drain valve and the base plate) were the same as in the Rover filter. The only difference I could find was in the filter element, which in the Rover filter had 82 pleats, and in the Fram had 84. I certainly can't tell from looking at it which is the better at filtering.

So I have to say that the Fram filter (the one sold to me in the UK, anyway) is well made, strong and high quality. Perhaps it's time to reappraise the Fram myth?

Regards, Kes.

The going rate on a Porsche 993 oil change is approximately $150. There are two oil filters and about 10.5 quarts of oil. Not to mention it is a royal PITA. A DIYer can do it for about $79 ($55 oil (11 x $5 (mobil 1 0W40) + $14 for large oil filter + $10 for short oil filter).

For an Audi I would go with one of the German manufacturers like Mahle or Bosch. Check out Sunset Porsche/Audi on the web. They sell parts at cost + 15%.

Yeah, it's kind of steep but I've heard about people paying more than $300 for oil change on 993, at least you can enjoy that air cooled engine sound :xyxthumbs but why Audi is that expensive :nixweiss ?

I wonder how much it is for 996 or a boxster?
