Oh my god. What a DIFFERENCE.

I have a Metabo, which is AWESOME, but for lighter polishing I preferred the PC. Burned the PC up this summer, so I purchased a Flex. I haven't hardly used the Metabo since.

As a non-pro, semi skilled, user, I find the Flex the best. But of course, I have come into some issues where it would have been prohibitive to try to use it, and have sucked it up and broke out the Metabo. (One example would be the sanding scratches left on the hood by a body shop in my Jeep.) The Flex would have done the job, but the Metabo took them out in less than 10 min with Menzerna PowerGloss and an orange pad. The forced rotation of the flex does provide a much more effective polish than the PC did though.

But when you get guys like vasupershine, and such, with their experience and knowledge, they can do 5 cars with a rotary in the same time it takes us mere mortals to do one with a DA.

Just my $.02... to everyone their own.

I can't say that I'd be thrilled to try removing 1500 grit sanding marks with a DA. ;) That must have taken quite a long time and a lot of effort.

With a DA depending on the products used he probably didn't get them fully removed and ended up with some filling. Go over the car with an ISO wipedown and check it out for sure.

HOLY SH%T JEFF...

I can't believe YOU are having to wetsand that out, did the bodyshop re-spray the trunk? Nice work tho!!

I also got a UDM for xmas :)

Hey Erick,

I've got about... 45 hours of work into the clearcoat so far.

And now it's time to get my only foam pad out of the dryer (30 mins, extra low heat, perfect) and CONTINUE.

The ENTIRE car has been wet sanded, some panels twice because I was learning and didn't do enough the 1st time (a good thing).

And I've got a broken DTEC-BC solenoid on top of it all. This car is cursed I tell ya.

I've learned a lot of lessons in the last 3 months.

Wow you have a LOT of your own work into it, I take it the body shop's work wasn't sufficient again :)

I want to wetsand on a few areas on mine a little more, like the upper half of the doors. At least you went with a completly different paint color...people still think mine is OEM!!! :furious:

oh, welcome to autopia!!

45 hours of wetsanding and polishing??? Man, you really need wool, compound and a good rotary...

The majority of that tediousness was WITH a rotary + wool + 3M 3000 ;)

It's been flying by with the UDM and 3M 3000.

I have had my PC for over a year still in the box. I am finally growing some balls and decided to try it this weekend on my car. From what I have read I shouldnt F up my paint to bad if I use the correct pads and waxes/polishes.

Sorry if I highjacked the thread. Not my intention.

It shouldn't F up your paint AT ALL! :cooleek:

i guess,

The fear of the rotary has gotten in to alot of people, but with a little practice it is very hard to hurt paint with rotary. Unless you set the rpm at 3000 and sit there wondering when you should move.

I did a corvette last weekend, and it was so easy and fast with my dewalt.

Most of the time you have problems, is when you have these paintshops put on 1 coat of clear or paint. sometime, they barely get 1 coat on.

Of course, you do not need the rotary for everything.

:getdown

The fear about the rotary on this site is ridiculous. If you stay away from foam cutting pads and sharp edges and keep the machine moving you minimize the chance of paint damage.

I agree. Is not easy burning the paint with a rotary if you know how to use it.

First off Kickslop, the work you have done so far looks great. Secondly you took the ribbing from these guys like a champ. Your post was very confusing at first and many people took their shots at you, but you didn't run away. Good for you! When you are done show us some afters.

This site is full of fearmongers when it comes to using a rotary. It gets a little old after a while. There are some pros on here that are very helpfull. In the same breath though, there are some that get some weird satisfaction out of being able to use one and telling you not too. Their way of feling better about themselves. I am a professional detailer that handles one of this countries best car collections. But I always feel like I have things to learn and get a kick out of those that are learning from the beginning. It is a great feeling to do something for the first time or get the result you are loking for. I fear that some people won't post if they see other people getting treated rudely.

One last thing. A rotary is pretty easy to use if you practice and pay attention and no! it doesn't make you special if you can use one. In the end it is still just cleaning a car!
