Not liking 'Google Ads'

Detail time!
I'm not a big fan of the new Google Ads between the posts. Not only does it confuse me when the posts are separated but the content on the links are not so great. I can see a new member coming to DC and see "Never wax your car again", buy that system provided and get poor results and never come back here. Or just an outsider looking in that sees those links and think that they support the site. Last night there was one link where it said Free Klasse and when I searched the company, the results showed that no one ever got their prize and recieved junk mail daily from them. I know that they were on the old site but I just ignored those links but now its not as easy to ignore them. Anyways, just stating my opinion and am curious if i'm the only one. One last thing... :dcrules

You can click "Display Modes" then "Hybrid" and not see the ads.

We have ads that lurkers see that disappear when they register and then we have ads that registered users see that will go away when they change their Display Mode or, as of this weekend, they can also choose to become a "Supporting Member" for $30 per year and in addition to other features, will not see any Google Ads at that point once they are logged in.

One thing that I realized is that Detail City needs to be better monetized in order for it to continue to grow and flourish. I wish I could keep the site free of ads but since the forum basic forum membership and will always be free, advertising revenue is needed for growth and longevity.

One thing that I can do is filter the content that appears. If you see a link to a less than reputable company, make sure that you let me know what the url of the company is so that I can block it from appearing.

Thanks!

Dwayne

I just ignore them, but if they really bother you;
Go to the "Display Modes" button and click on the "Hybrid Mode" and see if you prefer that.

A little late, as usual.

+1

It's definitely confusing in the middle of the posts and I'm oftentimes confused if I've reached the last reply in a thread.

Unfortunately, I guess it's a necessary evil to help Dwayne pay the bills.

Awesome Dwayne. I totally understand that they are going to be needed just not happy with some content and placement. So many new things to check out I didn't notice the Hybrid mode. Thanks!!

Dwayne-- Can you expound on the " "Supporting Member" for $30 per year and in addition to other features" comment?

Hope you take Pay Pal for membership. I am willing to spend my last
38.00 dollars on DC. Oh, you did say 30 dollars did you not? Well then I am RICH!!

While i also do not like the ads that have been spoken of. I understand them. I belong to another site called Truckblog and they are a pay site as well and when you pay and become a member you then have the option to make the ads disappear and i think it is a great thing. However the pay portion also entitles us to view ADULT pictures on the site and also tell dirty jokes etc. Not saying that is needed here of course. They charge 12.00 per year.

Count me in for payment as long as it will help Dwayne pay part of the bill for the site. Can't wait to see what the upgrades are for paying members. Maybe Dwayne will throw us a bone. HaHa

Where is this button? I can't seem to find it.

I changed to hybrid. It was awful. It would never remember where I read, but start me off at the beginning of each thread.

Depending on what browser your using you may be able to just filter them out. I use "adblock plus" in Firefox and it works well at removing them. I still see a small box where the ads were but no ads.

Thanks for the tip. This works slick, I also downloaded the extension FasterFox, it also works well.

I guess you don't get to see the sponsor's banners either? :(

The bottom line is that Detail City offers free membership and Dwayne is doing the best that he can to keep things going.

Detail City has a very clean design and I think that the ads are targeted, relevant and if someone doesn't like them that bad, they can just scroll down. It isn't that big of a deal. Like Dwayne said, he will be offering an opportunity for members to help support Detail City and upgrade their memberships with one of the advanatages being that targeted ads will be removed for supporting members. If you don't want to support the forums and would rather adjust your browser to block the content, that is fine with me but I think now we should all get back to discussing DETAILING and not how much we do not like what Dwayne is doing with his website.

I know for a fact that 3 members have already contacted Dwayne asking how they can help support Detail City. I know that Dwayne said $30 per year but the last time that we talked we both agreed that $15.00 per year was a more attractive number.

I do not think we are saying we do not like the ads and we all understand they are part of the way we all get to enojy the site. It was just the placement of the one Google Ad is all. I like the sponsor ads banners it makes it easy for me to go to there site from DC if i need to check something out.15.00 sound much more reasonable.
