Noobie here...Porter Cable 7424XP wobble

Bobby G, who's got more experience than I with the PC 7424XP probably hit on another important key with the PC7424XP, two things he noted-made mention of, 1., the larger pads, and 2., the PC does not work effectively at lower speeds like 3.5 to get consistent rotation like a Flex, and do any meaningful paint correction.

Through all the articles I have combed through in the past 2-1/2 or so months here, folks here seem to say, and basically all agree, a wax-sealant applications at 3.5, OK, that it doesn't require rotation to lay down, or remove a wax-sealant, (if you choose to use the PC in such a manner) but for paint correction, there's only going to be two speeds, 5, or 6 that will work properly. BTW, there is no in-between 5-1/2 speed with the PC7424XP, it is either 5, or 6, they did not index the speed adjustment wheel in betwen those two speeds I've found.

Bobby, and many many others all seem to agree, the sweet spot with the PC7424 is a Lake County 5" backing plate, and 5.5" pads, nothing larger. Another good option, like I myself have, is the 3.5" Lake County Backing Plate, and 4" LC CCS Pads for working smaller areas.

Mike Phillips has repeatedly made note of liking flat pads over other convoluted, dimpled, or other types of pads for basic paint correction.

Again, hope this helps, my post here is basically a re-hash-repeat of what those in the know here have learned-shared, and am just again passing this info onto you. Mark

Lot's of sound information here!! :bigups

Great information Mark!

I was surprised to see how much of an improvement there was in both machine performance and correction ability just switching from the standard 6 1/2" pads to the 5 1/2" pads...

Choices

Porter Cable 7424xp - $129
Flex 3401 - $329

If you're taking care of your personal car the Porter Cable 7424xp is more than enough machine to compound, polish, and wax any car or truck. If you don't mind spending an additional $200 the Flex 3401 is an amazing machine.

OH, and this is the best time of year to buy due to all the Holiday promotions from Autogeek...:bigups

I agree with Bobby the 7424xp is very capable especially teamed with the smaller plate. Team it up with Meg's microfiber and LC hydro tech pads and you would be surprised. Almost all my write ups were done with this combination.(when I get around to posting more;))

The Flex is a great machine. There would be no regrets but the price difference would line you up with some great products and a system for non full time work. Once you dial in your process and products the Flex would be a great step up.

Somehow I'm gonna end up with everything. I ordered the PC backing plates (5.5 and 3.5), bonnets for buffing, and after all that the FLEX.The FLEX was 20% off with free shipping which was hard to pass on! It was a last minute sale.

Never really happy with the PC anyway - no fault of it, just awkward side handle68F.

The first this to do is remove the handle and replace with a screw. Hand on top gives better control.

Re: Noobie here...Porter Cable 7424XP wobble + FLEX3401

The PC issue I had was the operator. I went with the smaller backing plate and increased speed and pressure like you guys recommended and it works much better.

Now over Christmas there was a 20% sale and I bought the FLEX3401. Side-by- side compared to the PC it is impressive. However, when I used the FLEX for the first time it seemed to create marring on my paint, which ultimately I had to resort to my PC to remove. I was thinking the FLEX was foolproof preventing swirls/marring? Any advice on how to use it correctly? I followed the CD it came with it.

What was your process? Pad, polish, work area, paint system. You really do not need to use the same pressure as the PC and polishes break down faster.

Sorry, I left out a few details. Paint is about 4 years old and I was in the garage. Process was first clayed the surface followed by using LC 6.5 white pad with BFWD polish. Light pressure with FLEX at setting 2 to work the polish in then increased to 4. Upon removal of product I saw the marring and stopped. Tried a second time with same result so I went back to the PC.
