Noob experience and a question

Hi All

Last weekend I decided to tackle my daily and "winter" driver -- a 2001 Maxima. I picked it up over the summer and other than a some scratches and scrapes, and possibly never having seen a coat of wax, the paint seemed like it was halfway decent shape. (Unfortunately, the scratches are fairly deep -- probably can't be corrected, it would have to be resprayed I think -- so for now I'm ignoring them.)

Anyway -- on with the story. I clayed the car and got the paint to "feel" pretty good. (Although I've never used up an entire bar of clay on a single car before -- it just kept pulling up more and more dirt!). Since I wasn't doing a swirl removal on it, I went right into the AIO which really made the dark metallic silver pop nicely. I followed that with a layer of Collonite 845. Buffing off the Collonite was the only step where I used my new P/C. I used a wool pad covered with a microfiber bonnet and it seemed to work well. I changed the bonnet several times, using 4 of them by the time I finished. It came out pretty good.

Here's the question:

Today, in certain light, I noticed what looks like hologramming in several spots. I was able to buff it with a MF towel and it came off fine. ("real" hologramming is a polishing artifact, right?) I did notice when I was buffing off the wax with the P/C, (speed 5) that I had to move it fairly slowly and in a circular pattern for it to remove the wax haze effectively. Is that normal? Or do I just need to work on my technique?

Anyway -- even though it's not really brag worthy in current company, here's a couple of pics. At least the finish is smooth and slick feeling now.

I have never used the PC for removal...Ever !! Ive actually never heard of anyone applying by hand and removing with the PC. And a wool pad on the PC ??? Maybe some of the wool was poking through the microfiber and causing the holograms?? Apply with foam pads and a PC and remove by hand, try that next time. Maybe the results will be better...(looks great BTW except for the tires)

Eh..I think that was just 845 residue. Put any of those durable waxes (Collinite, #16) on too thick and you'll have artifacts.
I agree. FWIW, I always remove (buff) by hand, and then sometimes I'll go over it again with a MF bonnet on a PC. I find that doing it by hand first I'm able to remove all of the product and I only need one MF bonnet to finish the job. I have read where some other members do most of the removal with a few bonnets so just find the process that works best for you. If you find some more spots that are more stubborn to remove try a QD.

BTW, your car came out nice :2thumbs:

Personally, I like the tires. Clean, deep black, no shine. Looks like they're brand new. They could maybe use a bit more cleaning, but they still look nice.

Thanks for everyone's feedback!

You're right. They hadn't even been on the car for 24 hours when the picture was taken...

Thanks.

I'll have to try applying the wax with the P/C next time. I always found buffing the wax to be more work than applying. I guess I was wrong in thinking that the P/C buffing would give a harder, glossier shine?

By the way -- what pad should I use for wax application? Is the "white" one that came with the P/C OK?

No, I wouldn't use that one for anything on the paint, they've been known to self destruct. A finish pad is what you want to use and they are usually red, grey, black, or blue depending on the manufacturer.
