Nissan GT-R : Where to start?

Please tell me how at the age of 19 you bought an eighty thousand dollar car. Whatever you are doing I want in.

The world has changed since we were 19 years old. There are kids writing iPhone apps in their spare time pulling down easily enough to cover the cost of this car. In any case, I'll take him at his word as he seems like a reasonable fellow and just congratulate him on having such a nice car.

I agree with Supe. If I were in your shoes, I'd try to team up with an Autopian for a tutorial type detail. You'd probably take alot from the session. Nice car

Guys... I think we need to get past the whole "19 and a GT-R?" thing, and get back on topic. The vast majority of responses so far have been "19 and a GT-R"?. Respectfully, there's enough of 'em. Now let's see if we can put up some helpful posts.

If you're going to be taking care of that beautiful car yourself, I would *highly* recommend spending *a lot* of time here on Autopia and the other detailing related sites, and read, read, read. *everything* you need to know is here; it's just a matter of putting in the needed time to learn/read it all.

Your car has some pretty serious swirling in it. I would think that it is beyond the limits of its self-healing clearcoat, but that's just a guess, as this new clear is new to all of us. So your car is going to need to be polished. If you are interested in learning how to do this, it'll take about 20 or so hours of studying, and around $400 in equipment and products. If you think you might like detailing as a hobby, it's worth the time and effort.

Now if you don't want to spend the time and money on learning how to polish, give us your location, and I'd bet someone here can recommend a good detailer in your area to polish your car.

Regardless of whether or not you learn to polish, you absolutely *must* read up on how to properly maintain a freshly polished, swirl free car. This means (primarily) learning how to wash it without swirling it. Hint: the number of buckets you use doesn't mean diddly.

Congrats on your sweet ride!

Only 19 and a GT-R?? ;)

Appreciate the post, thanks! Yes I'm 19 :)... Just turned 19 a few months ago! Yes i'm very interested in taking this up as a hobby, so I'm looking for the right mentor I suppose... Someone to guide me! Someone who also wants to see me take their lead and apply it to my lovely GT-R. hehe.

The $400 for products shouldn't be a problem -- I just need to know what I need to buy, so here's my long list of questions!

I'm also very interested in which products you speak of, and how to properly maintain a car after it has been polished.... So lecture me! :LOLOL

Basically, I'm making a list of stuff I need to buy, here's what I got so far:

- Menzerna 106FF

- Menzerna 85RD

- Menzerna 83 (i think?)

- Klasse High Gloss Sealant

- Porter Cable

So basically, my few questions (with answers that are directed towards my car's condition / paint color / etc).

Are these products I should be using on my state given the current condition? Are they too strong?

Do I need to buy clay bars?

What's a good quick detailer to use while claying?

What wax should I use?

What color buffer pads do I need (for each Menzerna product)?

Are these towels going to scratch my car: DI Microfiber Waffle Weave Drying Towel - Detailed Image

Thanks guys. Lots of questions, but hey I want to get this right the first time! :doh

Ok thanks guys, I read it, some general information, and the newb resources is something I've read long ago, which is why I have the Menzerna products already.

Do I start with the 83, then 85, and then 106FF?

I really wonder if he really does own the car.

perhaps he opted for the early NFL draft...

a 19 year can't get credit for a car like this...

unlikely he would have 90k cash

insurance would run 5k/yr

if he were some 22 year old MIT grad I might buy it, but 19?

his writing style seems more like 15 or so...

and I would venture any 19 year smart enough to raise 90k for a car could use 'search' and read/learn enough to care for it...he's asking very basic questions that a couple of hours of reading would answer...this place has a wealth of easily accessible information

better yet he could find a local detailer and pay him to teach...or just watch him, assist him...I mean the kid is loaded right?

now for those who say that asking these questions is out of bounds or OT see if you feel the same when we read about the car wrapped around a pole...

too much car for a 19 year old, but we will soon learn he is a professional racer I'm sure ;)

I hope this is a joke. There's no way in hell I'd buy my son a car that powerful.

OP is clearly trolling for attention; otherwise he wouldn't have thrown in the first line or two of his post.

sorry -- 19 with a GT-R? I'm calling BS. If he truly did earn the 80-100K himself he'd have to be smart enough to search.

Sure he could be a trust fund baby, or his parents could just be REALLY stupid... either way.

The smart thing to do would have been to take the money he supposedly spent on the car and go buy a house. There isn't a single worthy reason why a 19 year old needs that car except to wreck it trying to look cool.

I don't really have any comment on your post, but I want to offer my congrats on the interesting use of grammar. Keep fighting the good fight, and maybe someday everything will read like a movie title.
