Newbie from Texas

Hey you guys,

I just wanted to stop by and introduce myself as a newbie from Texas. I am long time "creeper" of the forums who finally decided to join after utilizing some of the reviews and tips from the board. I am not a professional detailer, although my family may tell you differently.....LOL! I am just a DIY/Driveway warrior who developed the OCD curse working in my grandfathers body shop many years ago.

Welcome JRuss. How deep have you gotten into detailing so far? Are you doing paint correction or just keeping things clean and protected?

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome. I have done paint correction in the past, but I have not run a buffer or DA in years. In recent years I have used noting but elbow grease. Since I have been doing researching I would really like to purchase a DA, some quality pads, and do some testing.

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome. I have done paint correction in the past, but I have not run a buffer or DA in years. In recent years I have used noting but elbow grease. Since I have been doing researching I would really like to purchase a DA, some quality pads, and do some testing.

The Harbor Freight 6” DA with Lithium Complex grease, quality bearings (if you so choose), Lake Country 5” backing plate, and the Husky 9ft/14guage power tool replacement cord makes it quite the machine. Has as much power as the Griots Garage 6” DA, at a fraction of the cost. Paired with some Griots Boss pads and your polishes of choice and you’ll be set (I recommend the BOSS polishes if want something right out of the box). Shoot, with the money you’ll save, buy another HF DA for 3” duty with a LC 3” backing plate and BOSS 3” pads.

But if you’re like me and want the industry standard that will work on 98% of the paint systems on the market, go with Lake Country CCS pads and Megs M101/M205. It’s a winning combo, but for only certain people. (The last 2% are the paints that do not like SMAT abrasives, this is when DAT abrasives stand out)

My advice is that you pick a brand of polishes and pads, and stick with them. Get to know the products well, their good attributes and their downfalls.

TheMeanGreen, Thanks for the tips. I have been looking at doing the same set up for a while. The pads have been one of my biggest questions. I have used the Megs M101/M205 the last couple of years. I just completed a 5 stage on my daily with Griots compound/Megs Polish/ Fk1000P ( I really wanted to test after reading Accumulators thread). The whole time I was working on the car I wished I had a DA!
