Newbie - Detailing tips using these products

Hi all.

Just placed my first order with Autopia (hoping to take advantage of the exchange rate) and have purchased the following:

Sonus SX2

Sonus Cleaner

Foam Pad applicators (the blue ones)

Microfiber applicators (just because I liked the look)

NXT Liquid Polish

Sonus de-wunder polishing towels

Meguiars Microfiber buffing towels

SL500 - paintwork 5 years old on panels, 6 months on bumpers.

Some slight swirl marks (to be expected), a few a little to heavy for my liking.

Med/Dark blue - want to make the car look as dark as possible

Hand work only - no rotary equipment available

1. Any thoughts about NXT paste vs liquid?

2. Any recommendations about layering NXT 24 hours apart?

3. Any overall recommendations about using these products?

Much appreciated.

Lea

I haven't used any of those products, but I can help with your questions.

1. NXT comes in liquid and paste to satisfy the people that like to use pastes and the others that prefer liquid. I prefer paste myself. Paste waxes are able to contain less solvents and more carnauba content.

2. NXT has cleaners in it, so any layering is impossible. Each subsequent layer will remove the prior layer.

3. Both versions have some filling/cleaning abilities, so they are a good choice for a one-step product.

Actually, the cleaners in NXT are very mild and it is possible to layer. The cleaners will only remove a very small amount of any previous layer. As you mention, best to wait 24hrs between applications.

Lea, *my* understanding of NXT is a little different from (the other) Paul. :)

According to Mike Phillips, NXT won't remove as much as it adds - in other words, there is *some* layering possible. Anecdotal evidence suggests that two coats does look discernably better than one.

NXT doesn't contain any carnauba, but I agree with Paul that a paste would lay down a higher *concentration* of active ingredients.

Not all agree with this, but that's my take. :up

the sonus sfx-2 polish is pretty good. Well, it's the only polish that I have used, and I like it. I just used it last night on a friends F-150, and it removed a good amount of swirls in a decent amount of time. I would mist the pad with a little QD, or the polish will work in really quick. I am almost out, so I may move on to another polish.

I have used NXT several times myself, and I will agree that 2 *coats* looks better than one. I've always attributed that to a more even coat rather than 2 *layers*.

The layer of protection that a wax/sealant leaves behind is so thin, it's hard for me to believe even very light cleaners wouldn't remove it in a snap.

Hi Guys

Many thanks for the replies. I too had read that NXT will layer but as mentioned here best at around only 24 hour intervals and only 2 at most. Maybe I should layer the NXT with a carnauba (P21S) - but my understanding was that NXT's duribility is much higher?

I'm surprised that no-one's used the Sonus products before as their sold by Autopia and now I'm a little worried! I wish I had access to the forum before making the product decision, but excitement took hold :( and I couldn't wait for the forum to come back on-line!!

I'm sure this is 'the' question asked, but for the sake of the newer newbies what products are generally regarded as quality and value?

Also, I see lots of discussion about products referenced by number (#80) on the Detailing forum - am I correct in thinking these refer to Meguiars 'professional' products?

Any suggestions very much welcomed.

Lea

Edit

Whoops. I've just realised their a dedicated 'Products' forum so I apologise for not spotting it earlier - if the moderator/admin wants to move me.....?

I would look for a can of Meguiars #16 Paste Wax to apply over the NXT. If you can't find any,. grab some Nattys.

#80 = Meguiars Speed Glaze. I believe it's available locally in most areas, at least it is in the U.S.

Products that are a good value?:

Poorboy's S&G. I love this stuff!

Propel pads

WCD green MFs

SSRs

Meg's #16

Nattys

You should be able to buy #16 at Maguiars UK or from seriousperformance.co.uk. I have been using SFX-2 for some time and I find it a very good product.

Hi Lowejackson

Do you know of any UK retailers that sell similar top rated products - it's just the 20quid delivery is kind of harsh when ordering just a few top-up products?

Cheers

Lea
