Newbie asks some questions.

A confused Newbie
I'll put my questions in a follow up.. but first here are some pics. Sorry that they are dark,, was the end of the day.

Washed, clayed, washed, 4 Star UPC, DACP (hand), Four Star UPP x 2 (hand 24 hour cure),, no wax yet.

What I don't get is the red truck is dirty but it shines. :dunno

Hi gang,

I've been lurking and have gotten some great info. If I may, I'll babble for a bit and then ask some questions. Also I hope that no one minds, but I put my questions in bold text. I'm just not the most articulate person and Ive been on the Internet long enough to know that hidden questions will get over looked.

After I possibly wasted some money at PepBoys on products that I never used, I used Jngrbrdman's regimen. So I , washed, clayed, washed, 4 Star UPC, DACP (hand), Four Star UPP x 2 (hand 24 hour cure),, no wax yet. The paint felt great after the claying. Real great after UPC, very smooth and looked (to my newbie eyes) like it had been waxed. The DACP left a slight rubbery feel, the surface wasn't as smooth. Also it was harder to get off of some areas. The roof was the worse and the hood was the easiest. I imagine that the roof had been skipped at times by the previous owner. The hood is a non-factory coat of paint and I had waxed it with what even wax come with my clay.

I do have some questions about the order to do things and where to jump when you want to spruce thing up. The DACP reaction to the surface has made me think. Lets say I want the best results, for like when everyone get together and pops the hood. Do you need to take of the wax and UUP before you use the polishes?

I'm not too sure about EX. If I ever switch to PB, and I think I might, I'll probably use EX-P. It just seems logical to me that if you are going to seal with multi-layers you use a pure sealant. Any comments?

What if anything can you put over a Carnauba wax?

I'm getting a PC Friday. The truck has been driven once so I'll wash it and start with the DACP. And the wax I bought P21s Any comments on my steps? Should I add in some #9 after the DACP?So my total all day plan that makes my neighbor's think I'm on crack would be, wash NXT, clay, wash, UPC, DACP (PC), #9 (PC), UPP x 2 (24 hour cure), P21s x 2?,

The swirls don't look too bad. So I'll start with DACP and pad The Edge DA 2000 Blue Polishing Pad. If that doesn't work I'll use the Yellow. Then blue with #9 and white with the UPP and P21s. Comments?

DACP should be used before UPC (milder, finishing polish)

Polishing will (should) remove the waxes. No other step should be needed.

Either EX or EX-P can be layered, as far as I know. Depends on what look you want-"warm" or "clear."

You can put more carnauba over a carnauba wax. And QD's.

Steps should be wash, clay, wash, DACP, 9, UPC, UPP, wax.

Good idea going for the polishing before the cutting.

Hope this helps.

(snip)

Thanks.. I was thinking Ultimate Paint Cleanser, meaning cleaning so all the nasites were off before the polish.

Oh I forgot to ask. I had bought some Megs#7. Can I use it with the steps I'm doing? And where?

Thanks.

The claying should get rid of the bulk of "nasties" then DACP should "exfoliate" the rest. # 9 might even be skipped, depending on the condition of the paint after DACP, as #9 is fairly mild.
#7 would only be able to be used between coats of wax, as the "trademark oils" in #7 would adversely affect the bonding of a sealant. (Or so I've been told. Haven't actually tried glazing then sealing.)

There's a write up on Meguiar's online by Mike Phillips with some tips on how to best apply #7. I just gave up on it way back years ago when I tried it. I think I probably used too much. I'd recommend getting as much input beforehand as you can so as to avoid frustration during/after.

I was looking in another thread and I think I understand the term Cleanser better. You use a cleanser before you start to layer. You only can layer sealents and waxes. And only some of them.

Am I getting it?

Yep! :)

The reason it didn't feel quite as smooth after the DACP is because it's more aggressive than the UPC. Have a look around and you'll see some pix from some folks getting some serious swirls out with DACP and the PC.

Beautiful truck! I love that shade of blue. Be sure to post us some pix of it out in the sun after it's all done. Get the Dak next to it while you're at it! :D Something like This Dual Dak Photo :mohawk Love to see the 2 Dodges in the same garage!

Ok, I've been reading more and I confused myself.

I guess this would only help on very dark colors, but where would I ad a Glaze? And a glaze is also a filler right?

From what I can tell the proper order if using everything in it's pure stage would be:

Wash,clay,wash,compound,polish,clean(cleanser),glaze,seal,wax.

But Big Leegr noted that with #7 that might be a bad idea.

So what is the difference between #3,#7,#81? Is on more of a pure glaze?

Is 4* UPC a glaze, polish?

There isn't very much info on 4*. I hope that they are pure and not combo. I'm jumping in between guides on different sites and not all products are listed.

While I am by no means an expert, I do feel like I ought to comment.

It seems like you are buying a lot of products that you really don't need.
IMO, a swirl remover. a cleaner/polish, a sealant, and if you think you need it, a wax topper, should be enough.

You don't need to clay every detail. Maybe once or twice a year in most areas of the country.
DACP and Meg's #9 are both a lot of work by hand. With the PC, they will be easy.
So, my thoughts.
1. Wash
2. Skip the clay, you have already done it.
3. Swirl removal with the PC. I happen to use Meguiar's #9 and am happy with it. Might take a little longer than the DACP since it is much less abrasive.
4. Cleaner/polish. The 4 Star UPC
5. Sealant. The 4 Star UPP
6. Wax, If you really think you need it. I don't top UPP with anything but UPP about once a month. The P21S is a great carnauba wax. I used S100 and didn't think it was worth not being able to add more UPP whenever I felt like it.:dunno

So, I guess what I am trying to say, you will have a PC and with it, you can do a great job with only 3 products needed. Swirl remover, cleaner/polish, sealant. IMO, you don't really need any more than that.

Also, in my experience #7 was a real PIA to use. I have tried it three different times and ended up giving away all three bottles of it. It may just be me, but it seems way too difficult to use for the little benefit I felt it gave.

Thanks Charlies,

FYI, I was listing the steps in trying to understand all the possbile steps. I'll probably clay too often but I also mentioned compounds. Right now I'm not going anywhere near a compound. I'm sure I can do enough damamge with #83.

A few of the products that I have are left over from a pre-detailcity trip to PepBoys.

One of the reasons I'm asking about fillers and glazes is I might work on a not so old black car. If I do I'm not going to use anything stronger than a #9 so I'm hoping that a filler might hide some of the normal swirls. Also I saw that pic of a silver Vette where they used #7 and it looked great. And I'm just one that wants to learn as much as I can.

I guess that I need to learn about the chemical make-up of these products.

Isn't S100 and P21s the same thing?

Listen to what CharlesW has to say, it's great advise. I'm also in the process to scale down my products, when will it ever end. LOL

Yes I am and will.

Just very curious about the other stuff. And sometimes it's good to know about the stuff you don't use. I'm sure sometime I'll get into a conversation where products that I don't use come up.

When I posted my comments about buying products, I wasn't getting on your case at all.
It's just that it is so easy to get caught up in all the products that are available we sometimes forget that the process is what makes the difference.
I think it was Jngrbrdman that once said that it is 90% process, 10% product.
While we each have our favorites, lots of products will do a good job. Yes, even the Pep Boys stuff. You can buy over the counter Meguiar's, 3M, Mother's and end up with a good looking finish. Many of the products discussed here have benefits in durability, appearance, and ease of use that really sets them apart from the usual discount store lines.
Some of the really good detailers on the board would probably make a car look great with Turtle Wax. (I'm not endorsing Turtle Wax)
They also will often get into pretty involved discussions on the chemical make-up of products. Those discussions are so far beyond me that they make my head hurt.:D

If you ended up that you just couldn't sleep without adding a glaze to your process, you would use it after the sealant had a proper curing time. Then you would top the glaze with the wax.

When I've used a glaze, it was where I felt I couldn't get the swirls out (either too deep or I was doing it by hand, helping someone just starting out). I'd do a "cleanse" followed by the glaze, topped with wax. Sealants don't seem to do well over glazes.

Actually I was up all night thinking about it. Not using it, just trying to figure out how to use it.

That and this stupid leak I'm getting. I hate it when my insides look like this.

Also I've been playing around with a chassi paint. I just did the springs and drum. But it looks promising. Looks like I'll be spending the winter on cold cement. :bigscream

OK,, guess that's off topic. Please forgive me. :angel
