Newb--Question about detailing

I just bought an 04 G35 Coupe 2 weeks ago. The thing immediately noticed is that there are so many swirl marks. I told the dealer about it and they were just saying stuff like "its a dark car, it will always have those swirls" and blah blah blah. I went to an auto detailing place and the guy was being honest saying that when he is done detailing my car, it will be perfect. There will not be a scratch anywhere and it will look like water. The problem is, he said that after i wash my car a few times, the swirls will begin to show again. He said he will get rid of some of the swirls permanently but others will start to show again. Why is that? I thought that a detailer would get rid of the swirl marks permanently. Is he basically just filling the swirl marks in with something? Can someone please describe the process of detailing this guy is using since the swirls will eventually come back?

Another thing i noticed also was my windows. All my windows have water mark stains on them. I tried everything trying to get the marks off. I used vinegar, different glass cleaners, rain x, etc. The windows are completely smooth but when your looking from the inside of the car looking out, you can see all the water marks. It looks like my windows are dirty. Do you guys have any suggestions regarding this?

I honestly dont know much about car detailing so i'm sorry for all the questions. Oh by the way the cars color is Twilight Blue (it's a really dark blue color)

First off.....:welcome

It sounds like you need some DACP followed by Meguairs Swirl Free Remover, and then top that with a good carnauba. The one true way to prevent swirls is to be careful of your techniques during the washing process.

As far as the window problem is concerned, check out this thread:

BTW, you should do a search here on Autopia....there is a ton of information here to help you.:xyxthumbs

I’ve put this together to help you ‘find your way around’, hope this helps.

Suggest you start at David’s guide (Learn icon – Car Care Topics) and/or (Forum – University) you could also research FAQ (go to Interact-Features-FAQ) or Interact (Search) and then ask your questions on (Forums - University) there are also tips on products under Shop (How-To). The Autopia “Guide to detailing eBook covers most facets of detailing; every car-detailing enthusiast should own this book. If the Autopia forum solves just one of your detailing problems it’s worth the price of admission

It sounds like he is using a glaze to "fill" the swirls. The fillers wash out after a couple of washes. Are you planning on detailing the car yourself? What tools are you willing to buy? Try claying your windows, should take the spots right off.

I'm assuming you are looking for answers; seems a few (the group enthusiasm here is catchy) assume you want to take care of the car yourself; maybe you do , maybe not, other than washing (I almost bought a G35, nice ride)

I think your detailer was saying that if you wash cars like most people you'll get the swirls back just from the wash/dry process with the usual suspects of dirty cloths and sponges, etc--at a minimum use this site to learn basic wash techniques to reduce the deterioration between detail jobs; on the other hand--you can go nuts and join the club... Lots of knowledge here and products to try as well as truly expert info...good luck

ColdFusion, you could talk to a couple different detailers and see what they say, never hurts to have several opinions.

It is probably a combination of everything. I think telling you that he's basically covering his own arse incase swirls do reappear.

Some swirls can't be removed. They are in the clearcoat. He's probably polishing it to remove as many as he can and then is using a filler to get the rest. The filler will wash out eventually.

Washing also causes some swirls so that will also be a cause of the reappearance of the swirls. Don't expect to have a daily driven, factory paint car that is 100% swirl free. You can try your best but it honestly won't happen.

Thanks for all the info guys. I'll take your guys' advice and browse around the forum so i can learn to detail the car myself. The search button will be my new friend..haha:xyxthumbs
