Newb Purchase

Ok, I know there are a lot of newbie purchase threads out there...I know b/c I've read them. I have this currently in my cart...but don't know what I REALLY do and don't need. I fear I will buy some of this stuff but won't use it, which I dont know b/c I've never polished before.

So, here's the list:

- PC 7424

- 3.5" BP

-(2) LC Flat 4" orange 2 pk.

- LC CCS 4" white 2pk.

- LC CCS 5.5" orange 3pk.

- LC CCS 5.5" white 3pk.

- XMT pad Conditioner (BOGO)

- XMT Pad cleaner 12oz

- foam pad conditioning brush

I've heard a lot of praise for the 4" pads on a PC...the reason I added the 5.5" pads was for the larger areas (doors, hood, etc.) but don't know if i really need to do this. I basically would like to know what I will use and what I really dont need. I would like to save money by buying the essentials as I will only use this stuff to detail my car, and my parents cars.

A cheap QD would do the same as the conditioner. I normally grab a new pad vs using a brush, but its up to you. Otherwise it looks good to me. Unless the PC has a lot less power than the UDM, 5.5" should be just fine for correction unless the CC is very hard/the defects deep. In that case you could whip out the 4 inchers.

It looks like a nice order to me. Do you have polishes/compounds yet?

Alritghty, thanks for the tips guys. Guess I'll cross off the conditioner and brush then.

Thanks. :D And yes, I have some Meg's #105, #80, and #5 in transit as we speak. I'm also adding some Meg's #83 to this order as well. I think I'll be set for a while. :)

I don't think you need XMT conditioner, pad cleaner or conditioning brush. I would just opt for the 4" pads.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly :xyxthumbs Dawn Power Dissolver, or even just regular Dawn cleans my pads fine, and you can get by without conditioners and brushes.

I guess the 5.5" white pads might be good for the final polishing of larger areas, but for any real correction I'd just stick with the 4" ones. So I'd absolutely skip the 5.5" orange pads.

shine- I've never used a UDM, but my years of experience with the PC tell me that the UDM almost certainly *is* a whole lot more powerful/capable, at least with larger pads on harder paint.

99GrandAM- Be a little careful with that M105 with 4" orange pads. I've damaged clear with less aggressive PC/4" approaches than that ;) If you need to get really aggressive with the PC I suggest 3.5" PFW pads (you'll need a smaller backing plate) or maybe the 4" wool pads that Cyclo toolmakers sells (I haven't tried them yet). Wool is safer than orange foam, generally speaking.

ok, I just didn't know if I really needed any of the pad cleaners or if i could use home products.

I wasn't planning on using the 105 with the PC, I was just going to use it by hand.

OK, I know some people here are doing that. But *generally speaking* anything you can use by hand you can use by PC (and vice-versa); the PC is really just a "fast hand that doesn't get fatigued". Just something to consider...
