newb attempt on a 750i

Many thanks to the folks here for their suggestions and tips. For my first attempt I did an ok job. I think I could have done better on the top of the car, but overall I'm pleased.

Sorry, I didn't take before pics so you'll have to take my word for it that the paint was bad.

still room for improvement, but much better than it looked.

Tyler,

That is a great, great job !! Black is so unforgiving, as you know. :)

Not sure where you mean the black plastic is below the doors - are you talking about the black shadowline trim ?

I try to use a very mild cleaner polish on those pieces and the best I have found for my use is Zaino AIO on a 4" pad on a PC. I think I would use this combo on any plastic pieces that were intended to shine like the paintwork.

I have also used Meguiars 205 the same way if I needed a little more cut ability.

Remember, your pad choice changes the ability of the material to finish better, and/or finish down farther..

Great job, nothing better than a newly polished black Bimmer!

I am also a certified Bimmer enthusiast, joined the BMWCCA 10 years ago, and never looked back.. :)

Best of luck with your work, keep it up, check in when you can, we are all here to help !

stokdgs,

thanks, I'm not sure what shadowline trim is, but if you look towards the back wheel on the driver side just in front of the wheel you see the white streak. That is a scratch that has sealant in it. It was a pretty deep scratch. I didn't really know how to deal with it. Sounds like the same as paint scratches, just more aggressive polish, pad combo?

Tyler,

I can barely make it out, but I think I see it on the side view you posted.

If this is the rocker panel, it should be black paint mixed with something to give it a texture, so it withstands the rocks, etc.,, that hit it.

You should be able to polish it down,, but if it were me, I would first get all the white residue out of the scratch and see how it looks, and then decide if you want to go further. Get a toothbrush or something like that that can get into the scratch and not scratch the paint further to clean it out.
Sometimes QTips moistened with the correct solvent, etc., can help move polish out of cracks, crevices, etc., too.

If the owner wants it out, then I guess you have to give it a try- I dont know if it would be good to sand it if the area has a texture, because as you know, the sanding will smooth out the texture and make it more noticeable..

Perhaps, another way to go would be to clean it out, and get some touch up paint in it to help fill it, and let it go. Its in an area that may get hit often - it got hit that time, right?

If this is Jet Black, its easy to get touch up and it fills nicely with a Sword Brush you get from an auto paint store, and some of the correct thinner or reducer, for the type of paint, and just paint it in, a little at a time, letting it dry, until it fills it up. We used to do this all the time in the automotive body/paint shops I worked in..

If the customer wants to pay for Drcolorchip.com, these people have the process dialed in way better than anyone, and the result would be almost perfect and not complicated at all. I have used their system on many different paint colors and they always turn out great, and the paint stays in the scratch and doesnt fall out a year later, etc...

Good luck with this, you are doing fine.

good job on your bimmer tyler. i have a 2000 7 series and as far as the plastic below the door, i would go with the clean it and paint it method. don't think you can remove that scratch totally unless you replace the whole piece. just my .02 and i'm no pro

Great job Tyler. Thanks for posting :drool5:

As for the scratches...Its hard to say without seeing. Maybe a few more passes would help or maybe wetsanding, or maybe repaint, I dunno

Thanks guys for your thoughts.

stokdgs,

The owner will do exactly what I tell him to do or I will kick his arse....oh wait, I'm the owner...I could still kick my arse tho.

zoomzoom,

yep, wife, she helped for the last 20 minutes of a 4-6 hour job.

I'm going to do my duramax truck next....after I'm done with the boat:out:

Tyler,

Wow, nice ride/s you have there ! :)

Well, figure out a solution and let us know how it turns out, ok ?

I just saw you are in Visalia - I was there alot during my first career with Blue Anchor, Inc., one of the bigger deciduous fruit co-ops back in the 80-90's so long ago before you were born, right ?? :)
Spent alot of time going up and down Highway 99 visiting the different packing houses we had and making sure the Telecom equipment was in and working correctly, we had locations all the way to Delano, and later on picked up a bunch of growers in Arizona, Mexico, South America, Hawaii.
It was a great ride, until they priced themselves out of the market, and laid everyone off..
Compared to the little holes in the wall like Livingston, Lodi, Dinuba, Sanger, Exeter, and the like, Visalia was the next biggest city to Fresno.

Hope you guys have fun with all your nice toys !!!

stokdgs,

small world, I own a refrigeration contracting business. My father started it in 79 and he did alot of work for Blue Anchor in Dinuba. I grew up in Exeter. We now do alot of work for citrus and table grape farmers in the valley. Tree fruit has hit some hard times for a while now.

I'm going to take some more pics to give people a better look.
