New to the 7424

I just got a PC 7424 for christmas, and have already gotten detailing requests from some family, after showing them some pictures from Click & Brag. The only problem is, is that the buffer only came with a white pad, and that's it. I need to know if there's any good kits I could buy out there with a good combination of beginner's equipment. I'd like a selection of pads, and maybe another kit of compounds/waxes/sealers etc. I'm pretty set on getting some Natty's blue, since it seems like one of the preferred waxes around here. Anyone have any suggestions for a noob working with a bunch of newer Fords? Namely two Mustangs, and an Explorer? Thanks a bunch!
 
You're going to want to change out the backing plate to a velcro type as shown here, Flexible Backing Plates for DA Polishers ON SALE!



This way you can use a velcro pad of your choice. I use Menzerna Intensive Polish, Final Polish, and have been using Meguiars NXT as my LSP, but will soon try out Menzerna FMJ. Theres a pretty good kit on properautocare that comes w/ the Menzerna polishes and an orange cutting pad along w/ white polishing pad.

When I first got my PC, i went over to Autogeek.com and got the PB's PC Kit. It had products, and pads for a reasonable pice. You can get kits from Optimum, PB, Pinnacle, and a few more.

As far as pads for the PC go, I really like LakeCountry pads for the huge range of various cuts that they have on offer... however, a nice starting kit that you could get would be a Sonus SFX backing plate and SFX pads. These are quality pads, a good range of cuts (from yellow cutting, to white polishing and blue finishng), and they last well.



As far as products go, there are a great many produt ranges out there and many of them will deliver excellent results with the correct techniques. My personal favourite is the Menzerna range of polishes, the new cerami-clear ones being my personal favourite (designed for cerami-clear paints but perfectly safe I have found on standard paint types). A good range of products to start you off would be Menzerna PO85RD3.0x Intensive Polish for removing meidum to severe swilrs from most paint types, Menzerna PO106FF Final Finish for removing light to medium swilrs and Menzerna PO85RD Final Finish for final polishing and removal of light hazing and holograms...
 
Thanks for the tips, guys! I just ordered the velcro back plate, and have just tried messing around a little with this white pad on a spare hood I had in my garage. I have some Meguiars swirl remover I threw on first, and then some NXT I had laying around, and it looks pretty good. Unfortunately, I now have another noob question. I made a mess. I put 3 dime-sized drops of wax on the pad, but it kinda slung most of that on my shirt. :doh Any tips on application? Thanks again!
 
Put your product on the pad, then spread it over the area you want to do, THEN start the machine. SPREAD THE PRODUCT OUT FIRST..Good luck, should solve that problem
 
when i apply liquid waxes via pc, i put a circle around the pad and dab it in a few spots and then as i'm done working an area, i move onto the next one. applying wax by pc is great because you use less product and you get more uniform pressure onto the finish. plus your hand doesn't get tired... :)

Alright, time for another newb question. Sorry if I'm becoming irritating...

I have a ton of dust now. I'm sure it's because I used too much product, so I am cutting the ammount applied back a little. I just don't want to go too light with it, and end up burning or marring the paint at all. I have the thing set to 5, and I'd say I move the PC at roughly a half a foot per second back and forth. The wax turns to a light haze. Is it supposed to be applied so thin that it comes out almos clear on application, or is that light haze proper? I will have a digital camera worth a crap pretty soon, so if I'm coming off a little confusing, I might be able to explain it better with a picture or two. Thanks once again!

whoa! when applying wax, use SPEED 3 and barely use more pressure than the machine itself. it's not a polish/compound so you're not doing any correction, just laying a coat of wax onto the finish. also, work it in till there is a light thin haze (do slow overlapping passes in a couple different directions) and then let it sit for at least 15 minutes or until the wax is completely dried, then remove...
