new to detailing.. anyone ever had a pad explode?

Hi everyone.. I'm brand new to detailing, and have been lurking here for a few weeks.



Yesterday I operated a polishing machine for the first time ever. I was working on the trunk of an 03 maxima with a Griots random orbital polisher using an orange 6" griots pad. I was using Meguiars Ultimate Polish with the pad when all of a sudden the pad exploded and there was bits of orange foam everywhere. I had done mabe 2/3rds of the car already.



Can someone give me some tips as to what I did wrong?

I have, and it almost took off a side mirror!!! split the pad down the middle and threw me off balance...totally random because it was a brand new cyan hydro pad



never happened again though, fluke?
 
I have had a Meguire's red roam cut pad explode. I was using a PC with the speed up high working on a tough spot on the front bumper with very light pressure. The center of the pad Burnt up and the pad shot itself off of the backing plate. I hit the bumper with the Velcro of the backing plate on my clients new Jaguar XKR! :flame:

Luckily all the scratches I put in cut right out with the direct drive. But it was still a terrible experience.



Brand new pad, used it for about 10 minutes, center literally burned up. Looked like someone hit the center of the pad with a lighter or something.
 
I haven't had them explode but they've gone flying and ripped right off the Velcro when overworking them in awkward positions with the UDM on maximum speed. The Velcro part of the pad got very hot and melted the glue so it separated and went flying off into the distance. I was pushing them hard using a cleaner wax on the hull of a sail boat.
