New Puppy

Well I recieved my new puppy yesterday :) His name is Baxton and he is 14 weeks old...and he is a miniature dachshund! I absolutely love him so far, he loves to play and slide around, very cuddly, will walk by my side without a leash, sits on my lap in the car and sleeps, sleeps by my head at night..He's the puppy I have always wanted. He is house trained, the only problem is his signal for letting me know he has to go isnt very strong. Sometimes he will sit by the door, other times he will come to me and cry. Is there a way for me to teach him to do something when he has to go to the bathroom? Before we go outside should I stand by the door and try to make him bark? Thanks for the help..I will post pictures of him when I get home :)

Congratulations! I can't wait to see the pics. It seems like he already has two "bathroom" signals, waiting by the door and coming to you. You need to only respond right away if he is by the door, he will know very quickly that you get it. If you're not in sight of the door it sounds like he comes to you to let you know, get up and follow him. If you goes to the door that is the signal. Both our dogs have exactly those same two signals.
 
Congrats!! Before we got a doggie door for our sliding patio door we had a bell on a string next to the door. Sammy would sit by the door when he had to poo. If we're not at the door after 10 seconds or so he would whack the bell a few times :). It took about 1 week of training: take his paw and ding the bell every time you take him out to pee/poo).

Best advice I can think of is to get the book "The Art of Raising a Puppy" by the Monks of New Skete. Lots of info, well worth the cost. Most big bookstores have it. Their "How To Be Your Dog's Best Friend" is good too.



Housebreaking just takes a little while, during which time you gotta stay one step ahead of nature's call, getting theh pup outside before anything happens. And keeping cool when something *does* happen anyhow. Stock up on Nature's Miracle and get a little extractor. Heh heh IMO household-size carpet extractors have pretty much revolutionized housebreaking compared to 25 years ago.



I'm a big fan of crate-training too. My dogs still love their crates even though we no longer bother closing the doors now that they're grown up and well-behaved.

Darn it, my 7 month old sheltie still pees on the floor from time to time when I leave him alone to show his displeasure.
 
Sorry for the delay with the pictures...Been so busy playing with Baxton today I forgot to take the camera out to snap some pictures. I'll take some more tomorrow when we are outside...he just loves to play, everywhere I walk he will follow right by me or wait for me if he follows someone else. Here are some quick pictures I just snapped when we were getting ready for bed. His signal has already gotten better as he is getting use to our house more...he is scratching the floor and sniffing around in circles when he has to go potty, and instead of fooling around now for 30 minutes, once I spot his signal he has been giving me..I go outside and stand there and do not play with him until he does his duty...working great already maybe we just needed to get use to eachother. When we were playing today I showed him his tail and he is so interested in it now he always chases it haha :) I will post a video of him tomorrow for all of you to see and some better lit pictures!
