New Porsche Coming

I've ordered a 2003 Porsche Turbo that's set to arrive in January (after luxury tax expires). It's Meridian Silver Metallic and I've searched the archives looking for new car detailing advice. One area I have questions on is the need to clay the car since it won't be coming via rail (as far as I know they come from the shipyard on covered trucks).

This is the plan:

1) Don't let the dealer wash it or put any preservatives on it.

2) Get it home and use Zymol Strik to remove the cosomoline

from the engine bottom.

3) Wash with Dawn.

4) Clay bar ?

5) Z1

6) Z5 (2 coats with Z6 in between)

7) Z2

8) Z6

What do the gurus on the board think? This is a $140K car and I

plan to keep it forever! For the Porsche enthusiasts on the board

it has cinnamon brown leather interior, deviated black carpet,

X50 power option (456 HP), sunroof delete, aluminum guages, leather steering wheel,

leather gear shift/brake, stainless stell door guards, seat crest,

CD changer, lumbar. Can't wait!

:D :D

I would find the best elite detailer in your area do the delivery prep. Inform him/her that you will be applying Zaino and to clean finish appropriately. What's a few hundred dollars to start with a perfect canvas to paint on.

Congratulations.:wavey

Hi Bj,

I also have a 996 Turbo ( 2002, Guards Red/ Beige). The cars do come covered, and I did not experience any severe issues with dirt/dust.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING...DO NOT LET THE DEALER WASH THE CAR !!:nono When my car arrived, the dealer assured me their people did the best job, etc. Needless to say, the car was covered in light swirls/towel marks. After over 24 hours work, with 3M SMR and P21S, they are gone, but best avoided.

If it were my car, this would be my plan:

Meet with dealer...do what it takes to insure the car is mechanically prepped, but not cosmetically.

Inspect the car at the dealer....take your time and DO NOT accept the car until all is right ( learn from my mistakes...I rushed and missed a few things that had to be corrected later.)

Wash car with P21s BCS ( I don't get the Dawn thing...you're not removing wax, so why not use the best car wash?)

Inspect car for swirls...use 3M sparingly, only if necessary.

Polish with P21s GEPC

Wax with P21S wax ( including wheels)

Detail tires, front spoiler lip ( if non-aerokit) and rockers with One Grand ERV

Enjoy !!

Again, my opinion. Hope this helps.

If it is a completely new car, then you should not have to clay, but to make sure clean the car, and before applying wax get a plastic baggy, put your hand in and feel the paint.

If it is not perfectly smooth, then you may need to clay, altho it should be perfectly smooth.

The most important thing is to make sure it is NOT dealer prepped.

When the M5 was picked up I made the mistake of not telling them to prep it.

It took me a long time to get the swirls down to a manageable level.

After you get it home, wash it, making sure not to put on new swirls, and then just put on whatever sealent or wax you want.

Personally on a car like this, I like Carnuba since it gives it a deeper look, but if you prefer Zaino then do that.

But one thing you must do is when you get it and are done detailing, POST PICS!!

I would say yours is a good plan.... personally I would do the claybar anyways, since you dont know how the car was shipped out of germany (may have been on a train from the factory to the shipyard or somewhere along the line....)

Also I would add doing some sort of polishing other than Zaino on the paint, simply because it will enhance the paint that Zaino is protecting..... I would use for example P21S GEPC or PPCL simply because nither of these are going to be "too harsh" for the finish and will enhance the overall end result.

Sheesh, I would have thought at least one of you guys would have volunteered to take delivery and detail the car for him. Obviously, he wants to take good care of the car and you needing to keep it for at least a week to be sure everything is prepped right would probably be OK with him.:D

CharlesW if you insist I will take delivery for him.

Could get some pics of the M5 beside it and take pics and see whose M5 and 996 look better together, mine or gregs

Course I would not want to give it up after prepping it for him, so thats not a good idea.

=)

My only suggestion would be that if you go the Zaino route that you use ZFX instead of Z1. There's simply no comparison between the products and ZFX makes Zaino a pleasure to use (rather than a death sentence).

Thanks for all the good advice. I think I'll do the hand in plastic bag test to determine if I need to clay or not. I'll also add in

using P21S BCS and GEPC before I start with the Zaino.

One thing is pretty clear and that is not to let the dealer do

any non-mechanical prep on the car. I'll tell them I want a

call when it arrives and try to babysit it through the prep process.

Oh, and my wife probably won't even be allowed to drive it

let alone a helpful detailer! Thanks again guys!

I'd be willing to work on it for a week and I would even ensure everything is mechanically sound...
