I'm a beginner detailer and would like to purchase some products from Classic Motoring Accessories. What are the basic products that you would recommend for the beginner? Any advice or tips you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Bart Caldwell

Search the archives, there is tons of information about a wide range of topics and products. It can be somewhat difficult to recomend products, there are many factors that can change what product you would use. Such as:

1. Goals (What you want your car to look like)

2. How much time you are will to spend on you car.

3. How much money you can afford to spend on your car.

4. Problems that may need to be adressed (Scratches, Swirls, etc)

5. If you have access to a garage.

6. Applying the products by hand or machine.

There are more, but I think you get the point. Again, search the archives, they are a wealth of information.

Good Luck!!

Welcome Bart,

Take your coat off, read around, stay awhile. You'll find a weath of info on these boards. You can go to the CMA site and also find out more information about what products to use.

Most of it depends on a few things. Color car, age (paint condition), how much work you are willing to put into your car (how much money you want to spend). What you want your end result to look like.

(From CMA)

shiny dash = vinylex

matte dash = 303

miracle towels are a must, IMO

Probably Klasse (I'm sure everyone will cover it).

you'll get more advice after we find out a few more things

Welcome to the forum! As you will later see, detailing a car is more than necessary work, but can be cheap therapy, stress relief (well, maybe,) a hobby, or just plain enjoyment.

If you plan to purchase from CMA (Classic Motoring Accessories,) I would get....

WASH:
-Chenile Wash Pad-
http://www.properautocare.com/chenwaspad.html

POLISH/SEALANT:
-Klasse All-in-one-
http://www.properautocare.com/kla-16.html

TOOLS:
-3 Viper Microfiber towels
http://www.properautocare.com/vipmicdetclo.html
-3 Foam Applicators
http://www.properautocare.com/applicators.html

Then, I would go and buy a big, really nice and soft, 100% cotton bath towel, and cut them into fours, and ask someone to serge (?) it for you. That should be about $10.

And for a car wash, I would check out Costco or Target and see if they have any gallon-sized car washes such as Meguiar's Gold Class for roughly $10.

That should be enough for considering a small, <em class='bbc'>very[/i] basic detail on a car that is in pretty good condition.

What car are you doing it on? What condition is the paint in? What are your goals? To produce a perfect, Concours winner shine, or just long-lasting protection? How much and how long do you want to spend?

It really depends....

I would also recommend you to check out: http://autopia-carport.com/forum/showthread.php3?threadid=3092 reminding you that instead of buying the newest and latest products, learn what your problem is and how to diagnose it. Also check out www.autoint.com for some helpful Tech Tips.

And check out http://autopia-carport.com/forum/showthread.php3?threadid=2107&highlight=Technique+Patience for some added encouragement.

Have fun detailing!

if you are going to follow BW's advice on products. It provides an increase in gloss over using AIO alone that is noticable.

Welcome to the board. If you want to try some good products from CMA, then look at the Klasse AIO, Klasse SG, Miracle Towels, Eiman Fabrik Hi Intensity to clean your tires, rims, carpet, etc... Some quick detailer would also be great. Eiman Fabrik Clear Pearl would be a good buy. Some carnauba waxes over the Klasse Sealant Glaze is done by most here. My favorites are Pinnacle Souveran, Pinnacle Paste Glaze and One Grand Blitz. All these products are of very good quality. Hope this helps. Laters.

Thanks, everyone, for the great advice. I'll be working on a 2001 Nissan Altima (silver) and a black Nissan XE pick-up.

Welcome to the forum. as everyone else has said, there is a wealth of information to be found on the board.

One thing I would recommend you get for your p/u is some 3M Swirl mark remover. One thing about Black is that any impefection in the clear coat will be magnified.

Also, paint prep is key for a good shine on our Nissans. You might want to consider getting a Mother's Clay Bar Kit to remove any contaminants in the paint on both cars.

Remember...

Any quality product will give you great results... most people here use "Best in Class" products because we LIKE doing and overdoing this stuff

The most important thing you can remember is that products are no substitute for reading and following instructions with patience and attention to detail.

Enjoy Detailing

Thanks again for the excellence advice. To be more specific I'm looking for the following products:

tools (washing and drying)

car wash

bug and tar remover

glass cleaner

interior cleaner

tire cleaner

Also, my black pick-up has seemed to lost its shine somewhat. What can I do to bring back the shine? Are there any products that I could get from Wal-Mart that you might recomment, because I'm kinda on a tight budget right now.

Thanks again!

Hi Bart,

Welcome to the Forum. Glad you are hear. There have been extensive prior discussions of most, if not all, of the catagories of products you mention. I would suggest you check out the archives, using the "search" tab at the top, right of the page.

We at ProperAutoCare know it is a crazy problem for many of you with peanuts and that crazy static electricity that comes with it when your order comes in. So we had our peanuts change out to one that is different in color and that has almost no static at all. We hope this will help out in the opening of your boxes of goodies to be more pleasure and not having those peanuts sticking to you like flies. Let me know how it's working everyone.

Great! Here's a good "peanut" story:

Last summer I received a shipment from PAC. I was working outside when the shipment came, so I opened the box with my pocket knife, out on the front porch.

I removed my Gilmour Foam Gun :Dancing Dot: from the box and, while I was basking in the joy of my new toy, a STRONG GUST of WIND came up and blew the box of peanuts all over my front yard!!!!!!

Well (I thought). This will be simple. There are only about 2000 of them, I'll just walk around and pick them up. (not so fast fat boy.) They were sticking to my fingers, so after I picked them up, I couldn't put them back in the box!!! Either the wind would blow them back in the yard, or they would stick to my hands!!!:banghead::cursing::banghead::cursing:

I finally resorted to the shop vac, which my neighbors found hilarious to see me "vacuuming my lawn"!

That sounds like a segment for Americas Funniest Home Videos.

Thanks to PAC for addressing a common problem instead of just doing whatever is easiest. The peanut thing has cursed me from the get go and I always dread opening the box and digging through the peanuts to find my treasure at the bottom. Reminds me of Cracker Jacks......hey there's an idea....maybe you could pack our stuff in cracker jacks!! JK

Thanks for making the change!! I am going to order some BF products right now to take advantage of the sale. I look forward to much less of a mess and a lot less swearing when it arrives.

Keep up the good work guys!!!

What color are the new peanuts?

My newest delivery sticks to everything! They are rose pink in color.

It doesn't bother me though. If you use hand cream before diving in, the peanuts won't stick to your hands.
