New Paint Process?

Some of you old timers may remember Ron going on about the new paint process that was supposedly coming out. Was going to change everything we do, chemicals we buy, etc. Extreme chip resistance.



Anyone ever hear anything more about this? Have the big companies started to implement yet?

I believe I heard him say something about some extremely hard paint systems about to come out and you would need heavier abrasives to remove scratches.
 
I found this little snip-it about the paint system.



The paint itself is very special, using a "tintcoat" process with red Xirallic flake in a basecoat covered with a red-tinted clear coat. A synthetic silicate material, similar to that used in silicone computer chips, Xirallic flake permits a smoother surface than even expensive micas and aluminums found in most metallic automotive paints. The first industry use of a colored Xirallic (besides silver and gold) creates paint depth that glows, rather than sparkles.



Don't know anyone that has the 2003 yet.

I think I know what RH is talking about. I distinctly remember a discussion once about "smart paint" that would automatically fill in swirls by itself using encapsulated pigments or something within the paint itself. Supposedly, it was "swirl proof" because of this. I haven't heard anything else about this, and for the life of me I can NOT find the thread... :nixweiss



In the current issue of Popular Science (Scud Busters!) there is an article inside about the use of such smart paint to make military vehicles like the M1 Abrams rust-proof.

I have the new 50th Anniversary and yes it chips. I have a small chipped mark to prove it.

Not sure how I would figure out how soft the paint is. I know that for now I'm living with the micro marring. Can't bring myself to use the PC on it yet. And since I'm not Scottwax I haven't decided to do it by hand.
