New Pads

I`ve been out of the loop for quite a while, and my pads are starting to go. I tried to do a quick search, but I haven`t found much. I`m looking for something in the 8$ per pad range (in bulk). Are the buff and shine pads still probably my best bet in that price range?

What compounds or products are you using? That might help the experts on here zero in on a match for you.

I’m a “driveway hobbyist” who gets set on a few products and runs with them. I like Buff & Shine Uro-Tec yellow or white pads with Zaino AIO. But I recently purchased Blackfire One Step and find it really sweet with the new Rupes D-A BigFoot pads.

I`m usually an aio guy. It ranges from Meguiars finishing wax to the new mckee`s sio2 aio. As for compounds, it`s usually fg400 and then either sonax, 205 or super finish for polish. I`m not one to really change my ways, but I`ve seen all these new shaped pads and things (most are out of my price range per pad though) and just wasn`t sure if there were any hidden gems I was missing.

...this might be a bit out of your price range but...

Rupes has new DA pads and compounds/polishes...
They may be a bit more $ but they should last longer.
I like the Blue and White pads - compound/polish combo.
This is a brand new technology and I have found excellent results!
So, if you have been "out of the loop for quite a while", I`d give them a try!

DP detailing product pads are probably in that price range. Autogeek also has a clearance section that has some discontinued pads at discounted prices.

I`d just forget about that FOMO and stick with stuff you`re familiar with that works fine for you.

I`d probably avoid those "new shaped pads"/etc. if only because I have *ZERO* use for pads that aren`t just "regular ol` foam or MF pads". I hate those dimpled/etc. ones.

New stuff isn`t always better; old stuff isn`t always obsolete :D

Oh, just FWIW, for AIOs I prefer the firmest, "most aggressive" pad that doesn`t leave any micromarring, which generally means "pads with no cut of their own". In other words, somewhat gentle Polishing Pads (unless you`re dealing with stupid-soft paint).

Thanks for all of the feedback everyone. I`m really only replacing my orange and green buff and shine flat pads. They`ve served me a good few years, but most of them seem to be drying out. I`ve got softer and firmer pads, but to be honest most of them are still in their original plastic. I may pick up a Rupes pad or 2 to try out along with a few buff and shine. I checked the discount section and saw the hydrotech pads on there. Does anyone have experience with them?

I`ve *HEARD*, but *NOT* verified, that the Tangerine Hydrotech pads are virtually the same as the older Griot`s Orange Polishing Pads, which I always considered *THE* most versatile "regular size" pads for RO/DA polishers. If I could only have one pad in the 6" range, that`d be it, hands down no contest.

top98h- I`ve had pads go bad from mere age, but only a few times...you *might* find that yours are (functionally) OK; I`d cautiously give `em a try before assuming they`ve gone bad.

Rupes 15 (first generation), Griot`s garage polishers (old style) one 4 inch one 5 inch, rotaries, harbor freight das with 3,5 inch plates respectively.

For the price point you have in mind, I like the Lake Country (LC) SDO pads. They`re the same foam as the HDO pads, but the HDO might be better suited for the long throw machines with their foam interface.

Others have mentioned the Hydros. Been a while since I`ve used them, but I do remember liking them. In fact, when I was looking at 2" pads, I came across the Hydros again, and saw that they were on sale / clearance....and.....
[edit] The 4" Hydros are a pretty darn good size for 4" backing plates.
