[After the CeramiClear® top coat is sprayed, the nano particles of Fumed Silica (SiO2), which are synthetically engineered, migrate to the top 0.2 Mil of the clear coat as it is curing.



If you remove this portion of the clear layer of paint, the paint under it will be much softer and will not polish out or react the same way the nano particle portion did or would] - Dr. David Ghodoussi

Thank you for the information. So pretty much any polishing of this top clear may remove the Fumed Silica? I have acquired the car slightly used. Is there anyway to determine if this top layer is still intact?

Good write up.



Given that I do not know how the exterior paint was taken care of prior to me acquiring ownership I am not sure how many times or if it has ever been polished.



I would really like to get rid of the current imperfections but do not want to get through the initial ceramic clear which I believe you said was around 7 microns.



How evenly is the paint thickness throughout most cars and are places like door jams applied the same thickness and clearcoat. I ask because if I measure the door jams and say it reads 50 microns and the exterior body panel measures 43 microns then I would be very very hesistant to do any polishing.



TOGWT do you or are you in opposition to polishing the ceramic clear type paints or do you just use more caution not to go through the outer harder layer? Also are you saying that all the nano particles are composed of the top 2 microns and if you remove this layer which can be done with one polish that the paint will then fail to react the same or is it if you go through the full 7 microns of ceramiclear that you will run into these problems.
