NEW EDGE Schmitt Grout Sponge: Review

My angle isn't to save money, I have boars hair wash brushes still in the box! I just feel better paying a premium for a product that looks like it was designed by a true car guy to solve a problem. That looks like they wanted to figure out what else to do with existing Edge molds and filled it with a highly porous foam or added some chemical to make the pores appear. Not sold on this or the schmtt, they just don't appeal to me.

I do use Edge wave foam pads on my rotary and PC, I converted from 3m. I have bought about 20 over the past year and they produce consistent results. And please save the speeches about Aaron being a true car guy and owning a yellow Gallardo. The product will still be unappealing.

Is this made out of foam, or straight grout? Interesting design, I asked Aaron about waterless compatibility on the first few Schmitt designs.

Joke?

grout is what is between your tiles and that's what it was designed for

then are all made from foam

and are you talking about a "rinsewash" wash like ONR

or a product like "ONE"

2 buckets, 2.5 gallon solution bucket with 2 oz of ONR, 2 gallon rinse bucket with 1/2 oz of ONR and 1 oz of Duragloss CWC. 2 gallon pump sprayer with 1.5 oz. of ONR. Occasionally, I will first fill the presprayer with hot water in the winter and spray of all the sand and wells. Then refill with ONR solution and get to work.

Great, the pump-sprayer, do you fill with 2 gallons as well with ONR? Is it just a pesticide pump spayer? Thanks for all your help.

It depends, I use 1 oz. per gallon of ONR generally, sometimes, on a small car I may only use 1 gallon of water in the sprayer and 1oz of ONR. Others 2 gallons 2 oz ONR. Sometimes I may even do 2 gallons 1oz ONR. It really depends, play with the dilutions and see what you like.

yeah, its just a pesticide sprayer. Ive went though a couple of ones, try to find a 2 gallon or 1 gallon if you like with a pressure release valve. When they are pressurized and do not have a release valve, you strain the handle by forcing it open. Otherwise you need to run the pressure out and then unscrew.

Actually NSXTASY turned me onto the pump sprayer and it's my favorite detailing "product" that I have. I use it often to spray the wells of my wife's SUV, to spray off built up grime, running boards etc. It lets me go completely hoseless. I did a trashed / mudded Suburban the other day with 6 gallons of water.

To release the pressure you can tip the sprayer upside down and spray too.

Back on topic, nice review, I can be clumsy and drop the grout sponges all the time, so I will be all over this sponge on a rope.

Do you have a picture of it? And where you got it from?

2 year old update:

The Schmitt sponge was great.......until after about 10-15 washes. I used it like a glove and my fingers eventually burrowed through the foam, rendering the sponge useless(to me). Mind you, this was a few weeks after I posted this review, so it was a few years ago.

Final thoughts: My initial review was spot on, however, the durability is poor and therefore for 15 bucks it is not something I would purchase again.

I use the HDGS exclusively and I slice up one side as to give me a surface similar to the LC Cube Sponge in order to fit in the crevices(an area which the ESGS excelled).

The LC cube sponge is nice, though, it too has a rather poor durability(in my uses), though a lower price($5).

All durability is based on a HDGS benchmark, which is at least 100+ washes.

If it wasn't for the little cuts my GS has, you'd never know it was nearly 3 years old. I have a new one that is still in the plastic, collecting dust!

I actually very much like the discontinued Meg's Gold Class wash media, specifically the mop head (as a mitt) and the sponge. At $1.50-2.00 each at clearance sales, they are well worth the money.

By Schmitt GS separated too. I still use the blue other section all the time though. My hand was too big for the hole to begin with.

One of my ShMitts I could definitely feel was starting to wear thin at the finger tips. I think it was the GS version.

The white-white ShMitt is still my go to wash media though.
