New car time!

Ok so all my taxes are in order and I didn't have to spend my nights on the coner with a wig on to pay them! Sooooo I'm gonna buy a new car and give my Jeep to my girl. I'm debating between an SL63, GTR, or 2010-2011 911 turbo.(trying to keep it all around around 100k give or take 20) I'm leaning tward a GTR but I want to track this car and use it as a DD. I heard from my friends with GTR's that they do great for a few laps on the track but any kinda extended track time and you'll thrash them and void your warranty because of tranny temps. He told me this outta of personal expereince. What do you guys think?

I think any time you track a car you better plan on having significant additional costs and expect that your warranty probably won't cover a lot. Never wise to use your primary DD as a track car. If you have another one as a back-up that is different.

Though I also have to wonder about some of these high performance cars that don't warranty their cars because they are driven the way they were designed to be.

If you plan on regularly tracking your car I would look around at the local mechanics you have available to get a rough estimate on maintenance costs. That is an costs that could possibly sway your decision looking at the long run. My personal choice is the GTR. There's a local guy who is a certified GTR tech and set up his own shop which definitely undercuts dealership maintenance pricing while still maintaining the certified tech. Just my 2c. Or you could spend 70 on a DD and build a great track car for 30 or less.

I'd probably go with the Porsche.

Although I agree, for the money, why not build a track car for much cheaper, and be able to afford a daily driver?

I thought about possibly doing this with a Z06 but I miss driving a sporty car. That why I want to use it as DD as well. I have 2012 Cherokee 5.7 loaded up that I bought in July. My old car was an IS350 and tracked it all the time and drove it everyday. Never had any problems but I think when I get into the really fast cars they tend break easier than my little lexus did. I know that I had to do about 600$ in fluid swaps and what not every 2 track visits. I'd usually go like once a month. That cars suspension and brakes were all heavily upgraded with only a few engine mods. I could probably wait and buy 2014 IS350 which looks awesome! hmmm so many choices...

I'd go for the Porsche.

An idea to consider …

How about looking back to find a turbo in the 993 body style (1995 - 1998). They are the best looking cars Porsche ever made and you could probably find one in top shape for (guess) $50k - $60k.

The 993's, last of the air cooled motors, are still in great demand, are terrific cars, and would leave you with some extra cash to upgrade (think wheels, suspension, etc…) and make it your own.

Besides you will look very cool, even in Northern CA.

For example: Not a turbo, or mine, but here is a beautiful 993 with a handful of modifications to make it a bit unique. Got to love those curves...

I'd rather own that car than this 2010.

All I know is that the Camaro ZL1 is covered with full warranty ON THE TRACK. No other manufacturer I know of has ever done anything similar. So long as you don't change anything to the ZL1, your warranty still exists while tracking it.

Now, it's nowhere near the performance of the cars you mentioned in your OP, so I really don't see you picking one up, but it is the only car I know of with full warranty, no matter where and how hard you drive it.

This might be something to think about.... They have that crazy suspension that adjust 10000000 times a second or something right?

I would say Porsche. They are the every day supercar. Very reliable and track friendly. (More Porsches raced each year then any other car manufacturer... and I am saying this and not even that much of a P car fan haha)

I know many who have them as dailys / weekend track cars and they would never use anything else.

If you decide to look into older Porsches, let me know. I'm sure I could find you at least a few options. I used to think 911s were pretty bland, but not no more. An outlaw styled 356 is on my bucket list for sure.

Joe,

He has a point regarding the 993. To most die-hard Porsche enthusiasts, the 993 was the last "True" Porsche. It has direct linage dating back decades. The subsequent models that came after might look similar but they are completely different on the "Inside". The 993 will holds its value better than the new ones because these cars are sort after by the Porsche community.

As for me.... I am a M3 guy. :bigups

I go away for 2 weeks and this guy has 100k to spend on a car:D Is Julie gonna rock out to the system in the Jeep:rockon

Joe are you a BMW fan? I love the new M6. IT no 911 but good enough in my books.

2013 BMW M6 Gran Coupe

If you go with the 911 you still have to do a system with one 10w7 and Focal components.

:drool::drool:

What does a detailer thinks when he is shopping for a car (especially seeing pictures of potential candidates)? Does he really cares what it looks like (just as long it is in good shape) knowing full well he would work on it anyway? :)

A gentleman I know from the Porsche club told me that the traditional "RED" is the color to get if you are to collect them???? This coming from someone who has 4 in his garage (1988 911, 1997-98 993, 1968 911, and a full blown 911 Auto-Cross race car).

If you go with the Porsche I would definitely sign up for some driver instruction. They can be very unforgiving when pushed to the limit in turns. Is just a physics thing keep in mind all of your motors in the very back of the car Unlike a midengine or front engine vehicle. It's just like a pendulum when you lift. Its where the "dont lift" saying comes from. That being said I have a client with a 2011 Turbo S What a phenomenal driving car.
