New Car/Dealer to fix paint chips????

Hello there guys,

I am new to this site. I found out about it through Spyderchat.com. I own a two week old 2003 Toyota MR2 Spyder and the dealer had admitted to having a light replaced in the parking lot and it shattered all over the car. They will be "fixing" it this week. My question is would it be better to have them touch up the eight small chips or should they repaint the quarter panel and the hood. I am afraid of both applications and really can't decide what I should have them do? Also, is there a way to fill in the paint chips and cover them with the product like Langka with 100% excellent results or is it even more complicated and upscale than that? I am in a catch 22. I do appreciate your time. I have already order some products through the site. tanks :up

I wouldn't let them touch the car to be quite honest. My brother had the same problem with his Honda Oddessy but only one chip. The dealer reshot the whole lower part of the tail gate and really f$%ed it up. You can tell from 20 feet away the orange peel is so bad. At minimum, now they have to wet sand it out and buff it out (and probably leave massive swirls) or reshoot it again. The back of his new van looks horrible.

I'd find a premier body shop to do the work and get the dealer to pay for it. I'd never let a dealer do any type of painting, refinishing or detailing on my car.

tankhead- Welcome to Autopia. I agree with Anthony, UNLESS the dealer has an unusually good paint/body shop. My Audi dealer (Stoddard Imports, Willoughby, OH) is so good that people send Porsches to them from Germany to be restored! But they're the exception, and the only decent dealership paint/body shop I've ever run across- and I've seen plenty of 'em.

It sounds like your damage is right at the "flip a coin" level...that's pretty many chips to touch up, but not really enough to justify painting panels. Hard call. Try to imagine it done IMPERFECTLY, and go with whichever would bother you LEAST. Then keep that in mind as you go shopping for the BEST paint shop you can find.

did you buy the car new or used? if you bought it new theres no reason you should accept anything but perfection.

well the dealership shouldnt have a problem with sendin the panels with the damage off to the shop of your choice to get resprayed, dont accept chip repair, you bought a brand new car the paint should be in mint condition.

Don't let them touch it. make them pay to take it to a real bodyshop. Dealers + paint = hella trouble.

They will be using Aerocolours. Franchise. I got the guys name from the dealer. They ASSURED me that I will be happy. I found the guys number on the internet. He explained the process and said the red cars usually turn out good. I told him that if I was not totally happy could I insist that they paint the hood. He said "You bought a new car, you expect a new car, don't expect anything less. He said that it will not be factory, but should look good. We shall see.
