new bumper. will OCW be ok while it cures?

joyriide1113

There is no cure!
well long story short,

some idiot tried passing me in a shopping centre and braked fast to avoid hitting an on comming car and instead hit me...

not i need a new bumper and paint job...

ive heard, and yes, i know that you should let the paint breathe blah blah blah, but i heard somewhere that OCW is ok for new paint while its curing.

anyone?

You might want to play it safe on this one. You can keep Megs Machine Glaze on there until 60 days is up and then OCW to your hearts content. You might be ok with OCWing right away, but if you're wrong it's not going to be pretty.

i paged through the optimum site and didnt see anything listed on there. David at optimum will give you all the info you need on this subject.

He usually takes a couple days to answer each email. If it turns out that doesnt work You can use a breathable sealant like fk1 #2180.

I'm not convinced there are breathable sealants. For a little protection, try the glaze mentioned above. I've seen a bumper paint disintigrate when not allowed to breath.

yea, my main instinct is to obviously just glaze and qd. but if OCW is a breathable selant as i heard it was, by no means will i leave it unprotected.

hey guys. with regular washings weekly, a glaze every 2 weeks, and qd after every wash. what type of things can happen to an unprotected bumper.

Joy I'm sure it will be fine with using just a glaze.

I could see your concern if you were in the NE or in the snow belt, were there is lots of salt and sand, but I think you should be fine till the paint fully cures.

Think of how many people have never put wax on their car and the paint makes it a few years, you any have to wait a few months

yea... hey greg. that fk1 product you mention, does it really offer breathable protection? wouldnt mind applying once a week.

ill get some pics tomorrow morning.

I talked to an fk1 rep one day when I was detailing a clients jaguar. It had just got some parts repainted from a fender bender and the guy said to use 2180 because it was breathable and would not harm the paint at all. He said that is woudl protect the paint from damage but still let the paint breath. I trust fk1, and they claim 1 year durability on 2180. I doubt the 1 year, but from what I have seen so far, i wouldnt be at all suprised to see 6 + months.

From workin in the body shop. and a god shop at that putting any type of wax/ sealant on it would be the absolute worst you could do... especially a bumber .. they use " flex coating " in the paint allowing the bumper to wiggle as a whole wihtout spider webing or cracking. A hand or machine glaze would be best . Any type i and i mean any type of wax or sealant will not allow the reuducer to evaporate. In time you will see this the paint will not fully cure causing problems down the road. It's 50/50 it will mess the job up in the long run. thats to risky if you ask me .
