I use a Windoze machine at work but recently got an iMac G5 which I love. I am pleased to see that more are trying these well-done computers. I really love the new Tiger operating system...

Analyst: 1 million Windows users switch to Mac
Credit the iPod's popularity for the plethora of switchers

NOVEMBER 10, 2005 - As many as 1 million Windows users may have switched to Macs this year as the iPod halo transforms Apple into a technology industry "darling," an analyst said Monday.

In his latest note to clients, Needham & Co. analyst Charles Wolf reflects that Apple's fast-paced series of innovations have driven its resurgence.

"The momentum generated by these products has translated into financial results that have easily beat most estimates. Most importantly, Windows users are buying Macs in increasing numbers. We estimate that in the first three quarters of calendar 2005, over one million of them have purchased a Mac compared to our estimate of 500,000 for the entire calendar year.

"Clearly, the so-called [iPod] halo is working. Windows users are also switching because of the growing epidemic of viruses infecting their PCs," he writes.

Wolf also reflects that Apple's competitors have "effectively ceded the download market to Apple," and are fighting back with subscription services.

Despite the good news, Wolf downgraded his rating on Apple from 'Buy' to 'Hold'. This isn't a bad thing; The analyst argued that the company's shares have now reached their $61 target price. Wolf has doubled that price during the year.

"The risk in our downgrade is that the frenetic pace of innovation at Apple could present new opportunities, which could trigger an upgrade at a price that's much higher than it is today," he said.

Wolf argued that he can't create an estimate based on Apple strategies he knows nothing about, and suggested that Windows users may be switching to Mac at an even faster rate than he estimates.

I got myself an ibook G4 in August, one of my best purchases, I don't have to deal with spywares and those craps, hasn't crashed on me (yet), touch wood. Don't need to use Antivirus as there are very few virus out there, I find the Microsoft words better than the Windows version, go figure :wink: :w00t:

Agree wholeheartedly. G5 iMac here.
 
Good for Apple, the iMac fad is once again picking up.

I'm a PC'er through and through. More business and personal software, and not to mention better games (I'm a gigantic PC gamer! Halo rocks!).

Don't get me wrong, I think the Apple products are slick, well engineered but overall just not the most practical product for the buck.

For those who believe they don't need to worry about anti-virus and spyware programs on Apple products do some google searches to learn the reality of it all. These are more prevelant with PCs, granted, however they are picking up on Linux and iMac OSs. My recommendation to you if you continue not to use anti-virus software is don't do any financial transactions over the net and definitely don't use any personal budget software. For that matter, don't save any files containing any information that you don't want others to see. AV software is cheap and is a good idea regardless of which OS you're using.

Jeff, you do realize there has never been a single virus that was successfully released in OS X. That OS has been out for nearly a decade.

I use Windows at work and even with 4 spyware programs running it is hard to stop every piece of malicious code. PC Magazine tested spyware apps recently and even the best of them Spyware Sweeper let 10 of their test spyware through. One reason is that OS X (based on the robust Unix system) does not allow programs to self-install without an admin password like XP does.

Cost is less than you think...since the hardware is more expensive but includes a great softwarer bundle in iLife. Incidentally ClamXAV, one of the best virus hunters, is free for Macs. Also, a quality firewall is part of the OS so you don't really need to buy anything. If you add in the software received the Mac Mini is as cheap as any entry level PC.

What's nice about Tiger OS X is that it has really good features for business like Spotlight, Automator and Dashboard. Many of these features are functionally ahead of what is coming in Vista. Maintenance is much easier as well.

I use both operating systems but I find that I am more productive on Tiger.
 
I've used a Mac since they were introduced in 1984! It was a 128K of RAM wonder! I wondered what I would do withh all the memory! It always amuses me to watch how Windoze manages to come out with a few Mac OS features a year after Mac and still claims to be innovative.
 
There has to be a reason why more people use and prefer Windows over Macs. Would any of the Mac users like to tell us why Windows is more popular among the masses?

Are we all idiots and are you guys just smarter than all of us dummies that use Windoze???

:) More people use Windows because it is licensed for other computers unlike OS X.

I do believe Apple consumers tend to be more innovative in some ways than wintel PC users. They tend to be a more creative lot by profession or you have folks like me who got sick and tired of spyware and endless utility purchases and decided to try one out and fell in love with the system and service.
