magnification effect - yes, and add chemicals in the water and you have the car version of the Chinese Water Torture. I saw an add a long time ago for some miracle wax on TV that advertised it's sheeting action as opposed to beading. I'm just speculating, but, since the car was new - then, the paint would have zero protection on it and that contributed to the intense etching too.

Best light for spotting etching, IMO.
