well i have a black 1996 mustang, and i've clayed it. However, the white pad is very black after just polishing the hood with my pc and ssr1.

Is there a way to tell if this is contamination or paint(the paint is metallic if that helps)? The car was repainted, a few years ago, before i got it, and the receipt says it was clearcoated(if this helps in your answer)

thanks,

mike

That certainly *sounds* like single stage (non-clear coated) paint to me, but it's tough to tell without a picture of the pad. I've never seen a dirty pad from polishing look as black as a pad from polishing single stage paint. If it does look *black*, and not just dirty, then that really sound like single stage to me.

If it is single stage, you can tell really easily with a cleaner wax or product like AIO or something like that... Put a little on a foam pad rub it onto the paint a little in one spot. If after just a couple seconds of rubbing, you already see the foam pad starting to turn black, that's definitely paint transfer.

Obviously, you can also tell with a polish like the SSR1 you used, i just didn't recommend that as a test since you need to work the polish until it break down, so it's not as good for a quick test.

ok here's some pics.

I put some of the meguires paint cleaner on the pad, and rubbed it in for about 30 seconds, and thats how it turned out. And the other picture if of the pad.

If this is infact ss paint, then are these pads worthless after using them? And can i keep using the same pad for the whole car or should i switch to a new one when it looks like that(and just wash them out for later use)?

thanks again,

mike

I use the same pad to polish SS paint during each round of polishing. The pic you showed was not a lot of paint on it, so don't worry. Then I just clean the pads out with pad cleaner and reuse it no problem.

Yup, that's single stage paint, thanks for getting pictures up so quickly. As David said, you're fine to keep going with what you're doing, and cleaning the pads out when you're done.

it possible it can be b/c (clearcoated) but with some tint...but i think your vehicle is just oxidize, like other said your straight just use some apc and wash them, the pads will be stained but there alrite....also hope you have enough pads cause they maybe caked up unless you do by hand with your towels...
