Need some advice on these 2 gouges in my hood

It appears as if they were deep scratches and the previous owner attempted to fill them with touch up paint but either improperly applied it and it bubbled or maybe the heat made them bubble.

My car is a 2006 VW GTI. Should I use langka? Sand this down. Both of them I can feel with my fingernail. Is it a hopeless cause?

Kolokefalo- It's a "lost cause" with respect to getting any touchup to look 100% perfect, but I bet you can improve upon the previous attempts quite a bit.

Yeah, I've used Langka to remove touchups like that. Others just use lacquer thinner and it seems everybody does OK that way (eh, I'm still chicken so I use the Langka ;) ).

I don't think the bubble-effect is from heat, it's just a crappy job.

Get the old stuff off and then try redoing it. Heh heh, that color is a lot like my GMC's Carbon Metallic was, and I gotta say that I never got my touchups to look remotely decent on that vehicle. But they didn't look as bad as those do either, so I think it's worth trying to fix it.

Thanks for the reply . I figured I could never get it to look perfect again. I am gonna call the Vw dealership tomorrow and see how much some touch up matching paint is. Seeing as how this will be my first attempt at doing this I am guessing I will go the langka route.

The real bummer is langka says not to do any machine polishing for at least 30 days after it's use. I finally have some time off work on July 4th weekend and I was planning on doing my first ever detail machine polish on my car. I suppose I could just avoid that spot.

I have varying degrees of luck with the paint matching, no matter where I buy it. Sometimes the dealership stuff is OK, sometimes not. It's simply a crapshoot IME.

Well, that doesn't open the big can of worms related to wetsanding!

You need to take it easy on the touchup paint anyhow, at least for a while as it cures. And it'll never be as touch as the factory paint even after it's done curing.

You could also carefully mask the touchups with some painter's tape. :up

Just watch that the painter's tape doesn't mess them up. It can be a fine line between tape that'll protect decently and tape that's too much for the fresh paint.

I'm not :nono: by any means, I've done this too. Just gotta watch it and sometimes it bites you anyhow.

Definitely. I wouldn't use it on super-fresh touchups, by any means. Week old? I think it would be fine. Wouldn't hurt to have some of the 3M purple tape (low-tack) tho.

Ah, haven't tried that one yet. Just tried the yellow stuff, with somewhat mixed results (though I can't recall the details right off the top of my head, must not've been any bid issues).

Some of the low-tack tapes have been a bit too sensitive for me, my pads running over them caused all sorts of problems.
