let us know how things turn out .
All turned out fine. I think I was more upset than the owner seemed. He still feels he got a good deal on the rest of the car and wasn't too upset about the seats.
At first, the customer didn't really seem to believe that the seats had been sprayed...he felt more that the leather was just 'worn' because that area of the driver's seat gets a lot of abuse. But the more we examined the areas of overspray, the different colors down in the seams when pulled apart, and the residual gobs in the beading gaps I think he came around. I think he now believes some sort of spray color was applied and that's why what happened did.
At no point did he get angry nor did he indicate he thought I had done anything wrong to cause the damaged area on the seat... he went from thinking it was a worn area to agreeing that the seats had been sprayed with something. I told him to bring it to a leather specialist or auto upholsterer and get a 2nd opinion if he was so inclined and to let me know the outcome. I told him I was 99% sure of what had happened, but I would welcome the information to close out the 1% uncertainty I still might have.
He asked me what I owed him for the work I had done on the rest of the car and I told him no charge as I handed him the keys. He seemed surprised by that and I had to convince him a little that I would rather take it as a learning experience and accept no money as I felt bad that the vehicle had incurred some sort of damage while in my care even if it wasn't my fault.
I'll certainly ask a lot more questions and explain my reservations the next time I detail a vehicle that has just been bought from a stranger.
