Need help with orange peel repair

Hey guys, theres one thing thats been bothering me about my 94 supra, and thats the orange peel on the rear hatch around the toyota emblem in the middle of the hatch. It looks like the previous owner had to have that area spot painted. Im guesing someome tried stealing the toyota emblem, and scratched the hell out of that area of the hatch and ruined the paint. Whoever spot painted that section did not wetsand tho, and it looks bad and its all orange peel. What should i do to get rid of it? I know i need to wetsand it, but with what grits? What compounds should i use to polish it once i wetsand it? I will be using a PC 7336 to polish it once im done wetsanding. Thanks guys!
 
If i sand the area with 2000 grit, then 2500, then 3000, then apply 3m rubbing compound with my PC with an orange pad, then apply some polish, will it remove the orange peel? Any suggestions on which compound and polishes i should use that will work with my PC to remove the scratches from the fine sand paper? Where can i get 2000 and finer grit sand paper?
 
Very often the orange peel is from paint being applied in a way that isn't effective at avoiding it. In other words, you could sand it down almost to the primer and probably still have it. Pictures would really be helpful to know for sure what you are dealing with though. Is the orange peel localized to that area of being repainted, or is the whole panel covered with it. I've detailed a fair number of supras lately and the older ones seem to have pretty good paint. I can't say that I've ever noticed that the orange peel was especially bad.
 
The orange peel is just in a 4"x4" area in the center of the hatch where the emblem is. You can see the paint behind the emblem is orange peel, and an inch around the emblem is orange peel, so its definetely from a spot repaint. The rest of the paint is perfect with no orange peel at all. I cant get a pic till the end of the week cuz my supra is at home and i am at school. Is there anything i can do to make the area look less like the orange peel?
 
Heatgun the emblem off, use 3000 grit paper, and go *super slow*. Check your work frequently by squeegeeing the excess water off. You want to get it to a uniformly dull surface - so that the peaks and valleys are at the same height.



Definetly go with Meguiars' Unigrit paper - its so much better than 3m. 3M rubbing compound should take 3000 grit marks out fine - but I wouldn't go any heavier via PC. I don't like to take 2000 grit marks out unless I'm using a rotary.
 
Where can i get meguiars unigrit sandpaper? Will autozone carry it? Will autozone also have the 3m rubbing compound? Should i soak the sandpaper in water and carwash soap for a few hours before, and use carwash soap to lubricate the area while im wetsanding?



So i should start with 3000 grit, and see if i can get it smooth with just that. If that doesnt smooth it out i just go down to 2500, then up to 3000 again? Is the 3m rubbing compound the best to get the 3000 grit scratches out, or is there something else that would be better sutied for the PC? Should i be using an orange LC pad at speed 6 on my PC, or a yellow LC pad?

No regular parts store in my area carries it and I doubt they would carry it in your area either as it doesn't have wide retail appeal. I don't know does Autopia, or it's sponsors carry it, but I assume you can easily check it, and if they don't you can order it from Meguiars (only in 25 sheet packs) or from Auto Detailing Solutions in singles.

What is the cheapest compound (price wise) that will remove the 3000 grit sanding marks with a PC with a yellow cutting pad? I will probably only be using it once for this, so i dont want to spend a lot on something ill use once and never use again. But i still want a good product

Patrick at Exceldetail sells 4 ounce bottles of the Optimum polish/compounds for about $5. So for $15 you could get all three: Optimum Hyper Compound, Optimum Compound, and Optimum Polish. A little bit of the Optimum goes a long way so you'd have more than enough for a one-time use.

Have a look at some of the forum sponsora, I ordered some sheets of unigrit 2000,2500 and 3000 from Clean and Shiny on Sunday and they arrived on Tuesday morning. And they sell them by the single sheet . I am sure other listed retailers in that section do the same as well.
