Need HELP with new Jet Black Bimmer

It spins in an elliptical pattern, not in perfect circles. It doesn't look like it's doing much to the naked eye, but trust me, it's capable of amazing things.:)

Drew... Thanks.

I chatted with Sal a bit this morning and he said:

"I personnally do not recommend using an orbital buffer. The speed of it

usually won't do any damage. But you can lose a pad and scratch the

paint finish. Or I've seen guys slip with them and screw up the paint.

I've tried Zaino Show Car Polish with a orbital buffer and have found no

benefit at all to using one. The polish is so easy to use I don't feel

it's necessary. It's a matter of personal preference. An orbital buffer

is designed to be used with a product that's a difficult to apply

and remove by hand. But you can use an orbital buffer with a 100%

Cotton or Foam pad if you want."

Yeah well, I guess you can lose you balance, slip and fall face first onto your paint leaving big gouges in the surface with your teeth. It could happen but I wouldn't lose sleep over it or wrap my head with foam every time I wash my car.

If all you're doing is applying glaze, wax or sealant with little or no cleaning or cutting effect doing it by hand is just fine. If you need to do any surface reconditioning to remove swirls, etching, cobwebs or oxidation the machine will do things you can't.

PC.

There is really not much advantage to applying waxes or glazes with a PC. The chances of a PC pad coming off it so rare so that is a poor excuse to not using one. As far as what others have said a PC is the best tool for removal of swrils and scratches. Sure your new car has none, but give it some time you will get swrils. As far as your choice of product, it depends on what are your goals. Ziano last long, but I'm not a fan of its looks on a dark color car. The same can be said of Klasse, but I like the AIO as a cleaner and protectant in one. Menzerma FMJ IMO looks better on dark color cars, but I do find 4*UPP or WG looks better. The negative of these sealants is that they don't last as long. IMO its hard to beat the Menzerma polishes and their prices are not that expensive either.

Lots of good advice here and I don't disagree with any of it but if it is minor etching you could try Meguairs ScratchX by hand. Use it several times in each area. Lots is written about it and it is quite good and very safe.

Welcome to Autopia! Sweet car by the way! Don't be affraid to clay. It's very easy to do. Just about fool proof. Spray enough QD or a car wash/water mixture on the surface & gently rub the clay in a back and forth motion over the surface in a 2x2 area. 3-4 passes should do the trick. wipe dry with a MF & move on to the next 2x2 area.

Just about everyone here uses a PC. Call me old school, but I have yet to buy one. I enjoy working by hand. HOWEVER, there's only so much you can do by hand. I, too, own a black vehicle & even I admit it's extremely difficult to remove any micro marring or minor scratches by hand. A PC is a must! I'll be picking one up very soon.

As for polishes, Optimum is the way to go. Menzerna & Poor Boy's are also nice products as well.

I see you're up in Canada. I'd recommend the Zaino system for you. It will protect your car the best throughout the harsh winters up there. Zaino is an investment of both time and money. Well worth it, though.

Klasse All In One topped by a quality carnauba will produce a great wet look on your black bimmer. (PoorBoy's EX,WG,Chemical Guy's Extreme Top Coat Sealant are also great sealant choices for black) Black paint loves carnaubas! So many combos.....so little time. The waxes I use over sealants are: Natty's Blue,Souveran,Butter Wet Wax,P21S,Trade Secret,Meg's #26,Blitz,DP Max Wax,XXX Hardcore Paste just to name a few. All of these are teriffic waxes on black & I wax about every 2 weeks to maintain a stunning look on my Black tacoma. ( I use Zaino in the winter) Check out the Natty's Blue!

Dude,

I was just about to narrow down the field and now you've given me even more choices.

One of the things that is confusing for me is, once I get started... what are my limitations? Perhaps some products don't bond well to others?

Zaino sounds like a great product line... and if I use that... would I ever need carnuba? If I did apply a coat of carnuba... would it "stick" to the Zaino?

Some are polymers, some are synthetics, then you have the various wax types..... it really is pretty confusing.

One guy (can't remember who now) said, "make a choice and don't look back, or you'll drive yourself nuts." I think this was good advice.

Depends how much you like to fiddle around with your ride.

If you will be waxing alot, then use a caranuba. Nubas can go ontop of eachother, over sealants, as long as they dont have cleaning properties they wont remove too much under them/

You really dont need to top Z2pro, it is pretty much perfect the way it is with Z8 once a month.

Personally I'm not a big fan of Zaino on black. My favorite bang for the buck combo on black is as follows:

Optimum Polish (apply with a PC)

Clearkote RMG (apply by hand or PC)

Poorboy's EX (apply by hand or PC)

Poorboy's Natty's Blue (apply by hand)

Spartacus:

Z2 Pro topped with Z8 is a teriffic combo. Really no need to top Zaino with a carnauba. However, if you decide to experiment with a carnauba as your topper, you won't have any bonding issues applying carnauba to Z5/Z2 Pro/Z8. You will only have bonding issues if you attempt to apply Zaino to a carnauba. ( not vice versa) Just for the heck of it, I applied a layer of Souveran over Z5 x3/ Z2 Pro x3 & to my black truck. It looked insanely deep & wet. I, after all, am a carnaubaholic.......carnauba junkie......carnauba crazed lunatic!! I just love the rich, deep, wet look of quality carnauba waxes! I wax quite frequently because I love to do it. My only complaint with the Zaino products is that fact that the stuff is soooooo good! Apply the Zaino system & your paint is good to go for 6+ months. I use Zaino now as my winter sealant. (winter here in west texas lasts about 2 months) For some reason, I just can't keep my hands of my trucks paint for more than 2 weeks at a time. For instance......there's no reason to apply Zaino every 2 weeks! Except for Z6/Z8 after washings. Carnaubas on the other hand allow my to maintain my addiction.

As for making a choice & not look back........That's sound advice. Easy on the wallet, too! Stick with Zaino if it meets your needs. ( unless you're an addict like me )

BlkTac05,

I appreciate your comments. One question.... do you strip everything down with Dawn before applying your next application of Zaino?

What I mean is.. IF you "top" Zaino with carnuba... over and over (every 2 weeks)... and then you get the bug to apply a coat of Z8...... do you wash with Dawn and then go through the madness again?

Just to clear up a couple things on the "where and when to post" subject, you can post anywhere you want on the forum with any title, whether it be Apprentice, Enthusiast, or whatever. That being said, we do ask that "Apprentice type" questions be placed in the Autopia University forum. This particular post would be a good one for that forum since most beginners like to browse that forum specifically, and will get a lot of good info from it.

Now, as far as double posting, yes, it's a :nono and is discussed in the Autopia House Rules.

If you ever need a thread moved, just contact a moderator and we will be more than happy to move it for you, no problem.

Last, in the future, if anyone has an issue with a thread or post, please use the "Report" button so it can be handled accordingly without disrupting the thread.

If anyone has questions, please PM me. I have moved this thread to the AU forum.

Thank you all for your cooperation. :up

I save Dawn for my dishes. I don't really care to use it as a car wash. When I go back to Zaino I use the Z7 wash,clay,Z7 wash again, then either ZPC of AIO before Z5/Z2 Pro/Z8. ZPC is a great product! Preps the surface perfectly for Zaino.

As for tomorrow, it's looking like another coat of Natty's Blue on the "BlkTac".
