Need help soon - old Silly String removal nightmare

Anyone have a silly string solution? It's like Epoxy or worse. Tar remover works if you have ALL DAY to do it and I've been at it for 4 hours by hand.

DACP by hand hardly touches the stuff.

Used a Yellow pad and DACP and can make progress, but I wonder how long I can DA before I'm working down the CC. Maybe rubbing compound??? I don't know.

Any suggestions?..besides a di-grinder....:scared

Have you tried a solvent like 3M's Wax and Adhesive Remover? I've found it to be stronger than a tar remover, and it is labeled as clear coat safe. I'd still test it in an inconspicuous place. I've used it on my paint several times with no problems at all. Just be sure to wax/seal afterwards, as its name is very accurate!

Thanks, Dave. I still need something better then

some old Dupont(ok, but ran out)and new liquid Turtle Wax Tar remover (so-so to no, but good on tar). The baked on silly sting was like epoxy. A five hour detail turned into a thirteen hour death march.(Pics tomorrow). There were a couple of spots (found late)low on the rocker I'll get next week when I clean her carpets. Hope your 3M stuff works better.:xyxthumbs

Just told by "self proclaimed" former detailer,,:nixweiss , that WD-40 will remove old silly string. Can anyone confirm this?

On Saturday, at a local detailing seminar, Rod Kraft of Meguiars mentioned a product that effectively lifts the worst of road paint. It's made by PPG and I didn't jot down the name, something cryptic sounding like GX400 :nixweiss.

Mike Phillips--if you see this post please see my PM over on MOL re: this topic. Thanks!

WD-40 will remove just about anything. My friend had a piece of gum spread over the back of his Z-28 and baked into the finish all day in SC summer heat and sun.

He tried several products and then came by. We squirted it with some WD-40 and it came right off. I'd squirt it on and let it sit a while. I've tried it on older gum "strings" found on my mudflaps and you have to let it work in for about 10 min then wipe. Be sure to wash/wax the area afterwords.

Dude, I'm all ears on this thread. My g/f parked her SAAB in a ratty garage and what I believe to be limestone drips have sealed themselves to the finish. Razor took it right off the glass, but on the paint I tried clay, Scratch X, 3M Rubbing compound with no luck. I even tried my fingernail with no luck. This stuff is like crazy glue.

Hi guys, here's Rod's response re: that PPG product:

Hi Bill,

I'm glad you were able to make the seminar. The brand is PPG and the

product is DX440. It's a wax/grease remover and prep product used prior

to painting a vehicle. It should still be available unless they changed

the product. Check with local automotive paint supply stores that carry

the PPG brand.

Be sure to test a small area before dong large panels. Be patient with

these types of products. The more aggressive they are the more likely

they will damage the finish.

Let me know what you find out.

Rod

2000 Maxima SE,

Many thanks for the WD-40 confirmation. Gum off flaps...great tip. :up

Bill D,

You da man! Thanks for the follow up. I'm off to find DX440. Might come in handy next time!:xyxthumbs

I'll save you guys a cold one. Thanks to Rod, too.

~ One man’s opinion / observations ~

Concrete / Limestone Spots:

Calcified water spots on paint and glass, water and concrete / limestone spots are pretty much the same chemically - calcium carbonate, with the concrete being cross-linked with water

·Apply 1:1 ratio water with distilled White Vinegar solution, and using a spray bottle, spray that mixture on the spots and let them "soak." Then rinse with water and repeat as necessary.

·If the ambient temperature water/vinegar mix does not work, warm (100-120 degrees) 100% distilled

·White Vinegar, saturate a clean kitchen sponge with pure vinegar and hold the sponge over the concrete spots for a few minutes.

·If the above do not remove them try equal parts distilled water, isopropyl alcohol and distilled white vinegar. The acid in the vinegar will help etch and dissolve the concrete. Rinse the area toughly with water after the vinegar and then reapply wax or sealant to that area.

~Hope this helps ~

This weekend I got the car back to continue working the last area. WD-40 removed old silly string off the rubber seals around the windows and trim plastics very well. Turned gummy and was easy to rub off.

WD-40 did NOT work on the painted areas. The car's owner told me today it had been on for over a year! TWO HOT SUMMERS parked outdoors!

Went to several auto paint specialty stores to find DX440 ...PPG only sold in El Paso. No chance to go today. Local shop guy used something that sounded like 3?12. No go. I think he said it was a reducer. He said they had nothing stronger and was surprised it didn't work. Great. Satanic Silly String from hell. Recommended I wet sand with 2000. (Maybe a di-grinder and some holy water after all.)

Went home and worked with Tar remover five more hours. Worn out.

Thanks to all who tried to help. :wavey
