Need help in Toronto... I think I messed up :(

I clay-barred, polished and waxed my New Beetle last weekend by hand (i do need to get a PC or something though soon) and I love the results. Car looks great, except for a couple of scratches on the trunk (from my goalie pads no doubt) and a mark on the passenger side (on the wheel well behind the back tire). I hate looking at these scratches as they are down to the primer (black) and with my techno blue paint, I think they look so horrible.

I've tried to repair them with touch up paint but to no use... they needed to either be filled in or primed. I somehow got the stupid idea to buy the Bondo Plastic Bumper Repair Kit at Canadian Tire on the weekend, thinking it would fill in the scratches and I could just sand them out and repaint.

Well, I got a little sloppy with the bondo and put a little too much on (even though I was using an old credit card to apply it). I sanded most of it off but now I have some paint that looks cloudy and dull. I used 1500 grit then 2000 grit to take it off, along with a lot of peeling with my finger nails. I'm so stupid sometimes :bawling:

Anyway, the paint is kinda dull, even though I've used some ScratchX to take some of the scratches out. It's not horrible though (I mean, I can notice it but that's because I'm looking for it too).

My question is:

Should I get a better compound (like 3-M) and try that on it or do I need a PC to buff out all the crap?

If I need a PC (and since I don't have one), can I rent them somewhere?

Or, if anyone is willing to do it for a reward (say a 24 case of their favourite beer), is there anyone here in Toronto that could help me?

TIA,

Dale

P.S. I live at Bloor and St. George but would be willing to drive my poor Beetle to get shiny again :(

Your procedure sounds OK but maybe you were a bit impatient ?? I mean you did sand down with coarse, fine and any compunding / polishing ? sealan and waxing ? You did not mention that ??

I only used the ScratchX so far for this... I didn't pick up any compound this weekend as the local Canadian Tire only carries Turtle Wax (which probably isn't very good from what I've read on here). I will try it with 3M Perfect-it and then go through the remaining steps.

OK, so here is another question for everyone:

ScratchX is considered a medium(?) compound, yes? If so, what is a more heavy-duty compound that I should try? 3M or something else?

TIA,

Dale

For how long and how many applications did you use with the Scratch-X? Remember, if you are doing this by hand you have to work the product in and do more than one application.

Any pics?
