Hey guys, my paint is in great condition. The car was repainted 3 years ago, and the paint shines like hell. There is one problem though. There are a lot of circular swirls. They are only visible when the sun hits the car, and it drives me crazy. I'm not looking to use a orbital buffer, so it would be have to done by hand. What is the best means of doing this?

Like this?

If so, doing it without a pc, and by hand will be very hard work, and will take a long time. Are you up to it? If so then I think the best way to tackle swirls by hand is with meguiars scratch x. By working a 1x1 foot area and buffing in the scratch x, with a foam applicator until dry, you will be able to minimize the swirls greatly. Like I said it will take alot of work. You might want to put down a glaze after all of the scratch x to do a little bit of hiding. If you dont have a glaze then meguiars #7 can probably be found locally. Top that with your favorite sealant and or wax and your done!

yes, very similar to that. only not that circular! any recommendations of foam applicator pads? ive been using some microfibril towels, but they seem to be making more scratches then helping.

Mike Phillips from MeguairsOnline shows using scratch x with there yellow wax pads.

Here is Mike using scratch x to remove scratches and swirls.

Thats the animal. You should be able to aslo find them locally, or one simliar to it, at any autoparts store.

I dont think that the DCP has as many fillers as the #7, so if you want to hide some defects, meguiars #7 would be a better bet.

I hope you have a lot of stamina because after doing swirl removal by hand (even on a small car) your arm is going to fall off. Depending on the depth of the swirls you may have to apply Scratch-X 3 or 4 times in order to get a decent amount of improvement.

I get all of mine at Big Lots, at 4 for $1. Can't beat that, and they work great!

Tip -- when using #7 (or most "Glazes"), less is more. Thus, if applied thickly, removal can be a workout.

In addition to the Scratch-X, I've had pretty good luck using 3M Perfect-it II Fine Cut Rubbing Compound by hand.

I liked it a little better than the Scratch-X because it would easily flash, even by hand. It's not quite as aggressive as the Scratch-X, though.

You might want to tackle the project in bite-sized chunks. Last time I did it by hand, I did a panel or two at a time, after a wash, and then re-sealed the panel. Once the whole car was done, I did another layer of sealant.

what kind of sealent did you use?

Klasse AIO and then a layer of Klasse SG...and I got to the point where after I'd buffed one panel, I'd put the SG on all the panels I'd done so far, kind of "circling then car....then when I was done buffing all the panels, I continued the pattern to get the right number of layers on the remaining panels...

Sounds confusing as hell, but it really wasn't. Since I did the front panel and the front door as one "panel", I ended up with 7 layers on everything:
- hood/front bumper
- roof
- rear deck/back/bumper
- front panel/door
- back panel/door
- Front panel/door
- back panel/door

If the car stayed clean during the week, sometimes I'd do one of the above in the evening, after making sure it was clean. Overall, was about a 2 week process.

I switched after that to UPP, but now I'm lookin at trying Wolfgang...

hope that helps some,
Andrew
