Need a new mattress!?!?!?

Anyone recently purchase a new mattress? My back is killing me and I need something firm. My wife also has back problems (herniated discs) so it needs to be very supportive. Temperpedics are nice but too pricey. Any suggestions or tips on how to shop for a mattress?

There are some "imitation" Tempurpedic (I guess the patent ran out) at a better price point. Since you are in Jersey, Rockaway Bedding used to sell the knock-off, but they got bought by Sleepy's, their site doesn't work anymore, and who knows if you can still get that.

I absolutely love my memory foam mattress. It's a little pricey but less expensive than some models. Mine combines both a pillow-top and memory foam so it's about 50% off the cost of a pure memory foam bed and, at least to me, is more comfortable.

We bought a Tempurpedic about a year and half ago. Completely different feel than a spring mattress. We love it. But, it is pricey.

They're so much more comfortable, aren't they? I tell you, a good night's sleep is a valuable thing.

I got a $5,000 Kingsdown mattress and I absolutely hate the thing.:down

Go to Bob’s Discount Furniture and get a BOB-O-PEDIC. A friend of mine has one and loves it. I think you can return it if you don’t like it. I could be wrong on that so ask before you buy.

I went to Sam's club and picked up a king size pillowtop and box springs for about $1000. It's not the greatest, but I sleep good on it!

We purchased 3 memory foam mattresses from Costco.com a little over 2 years ago and they've been worth the money, except the Cal. King one. All are the same brand and same make/model (just different size), but the large bed has no edge support for some reason. I'll be calling the company or returning it soon. Other than that, they were much cheaper than Tempurpedics and good quality spring mattresses.

After sleeping on memory foam, I've found it difficult going back to regular beds. I absolutely hate sleeping at hotels now as even the ones with good mattresses I still wake up with pain.

I switched to a Select Comfort bed back in '96 after I blew out my back. 12 years later, it feels the same as when I bought it, and the dual adjustment is a godsend for those who have a spouse/SO that prefer a softer/firmer mattress.

My $0.02,

The BOB-O-PEDIC sounds really interesting but the price difference makes me a little concerned. I might have to drive up there to try one out.

I have two novaform's from costco. One is two years old, the other is a year old. Both have been great so far. They seem to take a month or two to break in well. Also you really want to let the thing vent out in the garage before you bring it inside. They STINK at first.

We really like our Select Comfort too. It is better than any traditional spring mattress. It was worth the extra.

We have a Select Comfort in the guest room (my old bed) but my wife is not a big fan. Are the foam mattresses sensative to temperature (hard when room temp. is cold and soft when hot)?

i couldn't think of the brand, but yes, I have the Novaform's like yours. Before purchasing the beds a couple of years back, I remember reading how people had to air out the "stink" but all 3 of our Novaforms really didn't have a bad odor to it, so I think whatever made them stink before they've solved that problem. I get a kick out of cutting the vacuum bag it comes in and watching the bed take shape LOL. Our twin and full size beds have been awesome, but there's something wrong with the Cal. King. There's no edge support at all (compared to the others) so you literally roll off the bed if you're too close to the edge. I'm debating whether I want to return it back to Costco and get the more expensive Novaform from their website or just call up the company and have them ship another replacement bed to us. Compared to the cost of an actual Tempurpedic, the Novaforms are a great value.

It is sensitive to temperature (to a degree) and one thing I was worried about was that it would be too hot during the summer (from absorbing body heat) but I've never had a problem with the bed feeling too hot to sleep on. I live in SoCal though so while it gets hot sometimes during summer nights, we don't really have an issue with it being humid. Your body heat will make the bed softer as you sleep through the night.

IMO, your weight might have a bigger impact on how the bed feels to you. For a really small person, I've been told it feels like a hard sack of flour in the beginning. I'm a bigger guy so for me, the first night I slept on a foam mattress, when I first laid down and closed my eyes, it felt like my body was rising and floating in mid-air. It was a good and different feeling from what I was used to with normal spring mattresses. For the first time in a long time, I woke up with no back pain. I don't think I can go back to regular mattresses again. Every time I sleep at a hotel now my back kills me when I wake up.

I read about some people complaining about heat issues with the memory foam mattresess too. I'm get hot easily and the Novaforms haven't been any more hot than a regular mattress. They have a coolmax like cover on them which might help with the issue?
