Nedd some advice on trailering my car to a concours event

I will be competing in the PCA Concours event in Scottsdale next month. Since this is an out of state event I am allowed to trailer my car to the event (not normally allowed in Street Class).

I will have to hire a trailer and was wondering what advice folks had? Not just for hiring, but the whole process from soap to nuts.

I pretty much know exactly what shape my car is in when I drive 90 miles or so to an event, but really have no clue what it will be like after 350 miles in an open trailer??

Any advice welcome. Thanks JB

JB,

I trailered by 300zx this year to the Z International Convention in New Hampshire (about 350 miles). It was a concours de elegance show and I was concered on what condition the car would be in once I got there.

I actually used blue painters tape (Thanks for the recommendation Brad) on the front end and it really saved on paint chips etc. I took it off as soon as I got there and it left no residue whatsoever. I used the 2 inch tape as opposed to the smaller 1 inch version.

Hope it helps some.

I agree with PAW.

Less worry and less work to get the car ready for the show. You won't have to worry about road grime, dust, bug splatters, etc.

Because you can't rent enclosed trailers :(

I should add, if anyone knows where I can rent an enclosed car trailer in SoCal, I would be very very grateful. I have searched and searched and come up empty.

JB,

I just got off the phone with Affordable VIP Classics in San Diego to see if they knew of anyone that rented out enclosed trailers. (They are the only people I could think of to call.) They did not know of anyone who did. They said that you would have to pay someone to trailer it (enclosed), about $1200 round trip. They said that if you were going to do this frequently, you might look at purchasing a used one. They also said you might try one of the rental companies. One of them might rent those trailers.

Hope this helps.

Thanks...appreciate the call.

This is likely to be a one off deal so I will just need to rent.

When I took the SS to a show in the middle of the winter a few years back I hired a driver with a large enclosed trailer to haul my car down the 80 miles there and back. It cost me $300 but all I did was pull the car out of the trailer that was backed up to the building and it was just the way it left the garage. I also gave him a $50 tip for working with me on times and such. I wish you lived closer I would give you his number (If I can still find it) Sounds like he is just what you need... Good luck

car cover securely fastened + unenclosed trailer perhaps? A big truck or SUV in front can protect flying debris.

I have a friend who has a 1971 Corvette (black, balanced, blueprinted and blown) that he enters in car shows. He puts it in the "World of Wheels" show at the Bayside Expo Center in Boston.

A hot rod/muscle car/custom car show in January in Boston... whoda thunk it? :p

He has his 'Vette brought to the show on a flatbed. After the 'Vette goes up on the bed, he securely fastens a car cover and has it delivered.. no problems!

One of my Porsche Concours friends said he used a cover once on an open trailer and it did a lot of damage? He said "never again".

This is just me but I wouldn’t like the sound of a car cover whipping against my car at 55 MPH… I suppose that it could be real tight and not rubbing but I am a little anal.. ;)

Never use a car cover on an open trailer... The wind whipping it around will damage the paint big time...:down
