My thoughts about new forum

Not only do I not allow it in any of my cars, I will not buy a car that has been smoked in. No matter what you do to get rid of the smell, I can tell.

Oh yeah, don't put anything on my dash! My friends back in H.S. would throw their keys on the dash and I'd B!tch at them. After a while they'd put stuff up there just to p!ss me off!

I don't even like to ride in cars that have been smoked in-even if the driver has quit. My ex-wife's mom's car still reeks and she quit smoking two years ago.

Sounds kinda bad, but I don't even like having smokers ride in my car. Mostly because at work, we have a smoke room with NO ventilation and after having a cigarette they end up smelling like the room, ew. I definately don't want that stinking up the leather.

I'm one of the people who voted "never thought of it". I quit in October. I used rental cars until April, when we bought a car. Most of my friends don't smoke. The one smoker who has ridden in my car wouldn't dream of smoking in my car. Most of the smokers I know would never dream of smoking in someones car without being told they could.

No, I wouldn't let someone smoke in my car.

my wife and i both smoke...but NEVER in our car

whenever i take a smoker for a ride i tell them before we even get in.. we dont smoke int the car...if thats a problem we can take your car.....

What really did it for me was I had a 1970 1/2 Z-28, Back a long time ago.... She begged me to let her smoke in the car while we were just cruzin around. She did try to keep it outside the vehicle, tapping the ashes outside the vehicle(well o.k. all down the side of the vehicle) Not daring to ask to use the ashtray. When out of the corner of my eye I saw her do a heavy tap & then suddenly throw it down, like??? Couldn't figure it out until the next stop light, when I caught a smell of burning cloth interior...seems the cherry flicked off wind caught it & flew right back to the rear seat cushion..'bout a perfect size burn Dead center of the cushion 1/2" deep. Her only comment was "guess that means I can't smoke another huh?" Very next day off to the upholsterers & $125.00 later it was fixed. So No Smoking really Means No.

What if they farted in the car?:D

But seriously, if you're so uptight buy a new car.

Looking at this thread, I'm not the only one that feels this way. I won't buy a car that "still" stinks (heaven knows I do enough farting in my own car:D ). However, I won't voluntarily get screwed by a new car dealership (again) either.

I'm a patient man. The I30 I own was never smoked in and was pampered by the previous owner. Why buy a new one for $30K+ when one that is 2 years old is half that price?

Why? Just buy one that hasn't been smoked in. Seems easy enough to me. Plenty to choose from, unless you are buying Lamborghini's or something.

A man after my own heart. I am currently looking for a used silver or blue IS300 for the same reasons that you stated when you got your I30. :xyxthumbs

As a business advisor, I could do a calculation that shows an unbelievable amount of money saved by: a. not smoking and b. buying a used car.

What does a pack cost now? $3-$4? Many smoke up to 3 packs a day. That's $12+ a day, $360/mo., or $4320/year. No thank you. Most new car notes are $450/mo. compared to used cars that average about $250 with the same terms. A savings of about $200/month. Total saved is over $560/month or $6720/year. NOW, if that money was invested over 30 years, compounded interest would have a hay day. To simplify things, let's not include the interest. WITHOUT interest, this is a savings of OVER $200,000.00 over 30 years!!!!

Discounting health concerns, is smoking and driving a new car worth it?

The reason I buy a new car is so I know exactly what's been done to the car by the previous owner... nothing!! I don't have to worry about whether the previous owner threw the car in reverse at 35mph or peeled out at every stop sign or any of that other stuff. Also, there is no perfrect used car. I would find an imperfection on it and it would bother the hell out of me. As for smoking, I smoke a cigar maybe once every 3 months... I don't really think I'm classified as a smoker. I don't smoke cheap stuff though (Swisher Sweets)... I smoke Avo's, and Cochiba's just to name a few. And for the money issue, I have enough money to where I don't have to worry about it. I try to spend wisely, but somebody will always find something you buy stupid or foolish (new car, 500 dollars worth of cleaning supplies)...

That's a good example you showed and 200K is definitely a lot of money. Just in case anyone here is understimating the power of compounding interest/gains, let me just say that if you invested $6,720 a year in a handful of well chosen equity mutual funds for thirty years and earned an average return of 12% a year (historical average for stocks since 1920) and weren't charged any taxes (like in your retirement account) you'd end up with $1,794,795.17.

Let's say you were lucky and your average return was 15% a year. Then you'd end up with $3,301,674.43. Not a bad amount. A three percent difference in performance almost results in double the amount of money.. Damn, I've got to stop smoking!

mbfan,

I hear ya. I just can't justify giving a dealership $ when it's not needed. Personally, I think that finding a good used car is like hunting. I actually enjoy it. I especially enjoy knowing I essentially made $ by buying used. When I only made $30K/yr, I bought used cars. Now that I make much more than that, I still enjoy it. I've bought one new car in my life. Guess what? It wasn't perfect either. Do you know that 1/2 of the cars on the showroom floor have paintwork done? I was an auto appraiser for an insurance company for 3 years so I know what I'm talking about. In transit they sustain damage. The dealer then sends it to their own shop and has it repaired and painted. If it's less than $500 (in most states), they don't have to disclose the damage. Again, guess what? It's their shop. You'd be amazed at the number of repairs (on their own vehicles) that are $499! After we got the Honda Odyssey home, I noticed fish eye in the paint on the rt rear qtr and I bought it with less than 60 miles on it. Buyer beware (new or used).

BTW, good choice of cigars. I enjoy Punch, Macanudo, and an occasional Davidoff (sp?).

Not in my cars, not in my house. No.... (Kicked the habit 15 years ago, so I'm really persnickity about the affects/smell.) :nono

It used to be that it didn't bother me because I was a smoker. I quit a year and a half ago.

Two reasons I won't let anyone smoke in my vehicles:

The unbelievable temptation to fire one up, even after 18 months and the fact that it smells so damn bad after they're done!

I rarely have to give a ride to someone who smokes (I dont smoke), but if they must light up, either the windows are wide open or the top is down...
