My take on a few Griot's products

BlackSunshine- Heh heh, I sorta guessed that by the way you like to try different products ;)

Maybe my perspective just comes from having done this stuff for so long, having so many other interests, and getting older (every now and then I can sense that the clock is ticking...).

I *will* say that bringing my beater-Blazer back from the dead was kinda satisfying, and I *almost* enjoyed working with H-T EC for the first time :D

Gee, sure thread-jacked *this* one away from Griot's :o Back on topic, I called them up and asked them (once again) for a new catalog...we'll see if they send me one. They still have me on record and the customer-service rep assured me that there's no "don't send this joker a catalog" note in my file.

But I'm about to send back another FACOM ratchet for replacement, that won't endear me to 'em :o Skip those Facom ratchets, they just keep breaking on me...so do my Craftsman ones, yet I have an *ancient* Snap-On that still works like new.

I have wondered about some of their tools... I have not yet ordered any. What's catching my eye more than anything is the new 6" deep wall mounted cabinet that has a fold down work tray. I wonder if it couldn't be had a little cheaper under a different label elsewhere. I also really like the looks of the detailing cart but I'm not going to pay the $129 or whatever it is.

It's a shame about your catalog situation... for the past several months they have been offering a free 8 oz. sample of this or that when using said keycode. The catalogs I get in with my orders don't have that promotion. I've got (2) 8 ounces of Speed Shine, Window Cleaner, Spray on Wax, and Car Wash for free using these promotions.

On the other note, I can certainly see how one could start to get burned out on detailing after having done it so many times, and knowing exactly what to use and what results to expect with said products. I'm still in the experimental stages where I'm trying new products, trying to find all my staples. I could see where it would start to get a little boring or tedious once you've been using those products for a long time....

Who mfg's Groits products ?

Heh heh, that's the $100 question :D They make a few things themselves but their tools/etc. come from a number of sources. The trick is to *find* those sources so you can save a bundle of money.

Stuff like the cabinet BlackSunshine is considering can usually be found a lot cheaper elsewhere.

If I knew who MFG'd the Speed Shine, Spray on Wax, and Car Wash, I would be thrilled. I think about the only products of theirs I don't intend on trying are the Paint Sealant and Machine Polishes. I'll probably pick up some Fine Hand Polish one of these times.

I haven't found any similiarities between any of the GG's products and the numerous other products I have on my shelves.

I think GG's makes the SpeedShine and some of their other such products. At one time, I could've sworn they were using relabelled Meguiar's products for some stuff...ceertain products smelled, felt, worked, looked just like similar Meg's stuff. Haven't tried anything of recent vintage though, and the stuff that seemed like Meg's was a few years ago.

The Fine Hand Polish is nothing special IMO. You might like it more than I did, it was one of those products I had no use for whatsoever...lots of stuff I'd rather use instead. Heh heh, but then I slammed the BOS too and you like it just fine :D

That's funny you mention the Meg's stuff, as someone else on another board had mentioned that "GG's products are just relabelled Meg's products." I didn't think anything of it, just shrugging it off as someone who didn't know what they were talking about, but I certainly trust your observation.

I have been using 1ZPP a lot lately for hand polishing on the GTO as I'm using a carnauba on it and that stuff works really well for that sort of thing. You can actually feel the abrasives breaking down through the applicator pad and the results are really nice.

Well, again, that was the older GG's stuff and I dunno about what they're selling today. Their clay seems the same as Mothers FWIW.

Glad to hear the 1Z is working out for you! I sure wouldn't buy GG's Fine Hand Polish if you have 1Z stuff on hand, but I know you like to experiment with new stuff ;)

I have stayed away from their clay based on your reviews of it. Definitely doesn't sound like a very good clay, and besides, I am perfectly happy with Zaino clay and Sonus Ultra Fine.

I may substitute something else for the Fine Hand Polish as I doubt it would be any better than the 1Z. Perhaps... well, crap, I think I've about tried everything else I've wanted. :chuckle:

An update on the BoS Wax. On my black gas tank, I keep getting these little white specks that need to be either gently clayed or polished off. This has never happened in the past with any of the products I've used on the bike. I wonder what the heck it could be? Everything else has remained constant... bike sits in the same spot in the garage every night, gets the same Speed Shine wipe down after every ride, etc.

Gee, that's a weird one :nixweiss
